I have a 1995 Mercury Mystique, 2.5L V6 automatic. Today on my way to work the power steering went all together. I checked the fluid in the reservoir and it was a little low, so i topped it off, but I do not think that is the problem. When i put the PS fluid in, i got the power steering back, but only for a few minutes. I think it may be the PS Pump, but I also found it odd that the power steering fluid reservoir was "bubbling" and making a lot of noise when the car was idling. I checked the serpantine belt, and its is brand new (i replaced it a few months ago) and it is still in great shape, and is not slipping. Anyones experience/expertise in this would be very appreciated. Suggestions? Ideas? Is my car not safe to drive? Thanks!

The Power steering works under pressure, if it is bubbling AIR then there is air getting into the system which can also mean fluid is leaking out. The noise you hear is air in the pump.

I would look for a leak all the way down to the steering rack. Pull off the boot on the end and see if there is fluid there, there shouldn't be.
your pump may be damaged but I would look at the High pressure hose also for fluid. and the connections also.

I think you may be looking at a new rack or pump. The rack is about 500 installed and the pump 150.

Is it safe to drive. You now have what is called Armstrong steering. SO if you can maneuver your vehicle safely the drive it home if not then tow it.

its a good chance that it is the power steering pump, but its odd that it worked again after you put fluid in it but not for long. i dont know how much one is for a mystique but its a good idea to check your local auto store and ask for how much a replacement is

well being that you are out of power steering and you are now incapable of driving the car with the ease as you could before. i would say it is definitely unsafe to drive. but i would just have to say that the power steering pump is going bad. it doesn't necessarily have to lock up to quit working.
