I'm making a cheese platter for a lot of people. What kind of cheeses should I use that are still relatively cheap, yet tasty- not like a crappy deli platter? I'm looking for 5 or 6 kinds of cheeses. Also, How many ounces of cheese should I serve per person? This will be one of many appetizers. Any ideas on where to buy or order cheese from? Many thanks in advance!

Looking for something classy, please, yet reasonable, and tasty. Also needs to be like a finger food type thing. Or maybe some softer cheeses for crackers?

a wheel of brie is lovely, served with table water crackers (Carr's brand are nice) and a chutney or mango salsa. Also, a sharp cheddar, baby swiss, roquefort, and havarti, are relatively inexpensive, and quite classy. Serve not only with crackers, but perhaps toast points, sliced pears, and apple wedges (dunk them in a strong fresh lemon water to prevent them from turning brown). Most of these cheeses could be found in your local grocery at a reasonable price

Good cheese doesn't have to be expensive. Cabot Cheese is having a sale on their website right now. They make some of the most incredible cheddars I've ever tried.

Your local grocery store may have just the selection you're looking for. If you have a gourmet store that has a dedicated cheesemonger, go there and ask lots of questions and try everything before you buy.

You could go a few different ways here. You could do a selection of cheddars from mild to sharp, or you could do a variety of different cheeses.

To save money, don't by sliced cheese. Slicing is a labor process that adds to the cost of cheese.

When figuring out how much you'll need, count on about 4 ounces per person.
