I'm not what someone would refer to as a 'hardened smoker' - I generally smoke around 20-30 a week, 40 max. And they're Silk Cut Silver, so low nicotene and tar and all that jazz... but, I have noticed myself smoking a bit more recently because of stress with college, I failed an exam, and I broke up with my boyfriend, and I have manic depression which has been fluctuating madly.

what I want to know is, I have tonsillitis, not quite sure where from, I don't get it very often at all, and last time I didn't even notice I had it! I had white lumps on my tonsills, but didn't really feel much discomfort at all - I just ignored it and it went away. Could my smoking have contributed to my tonsillitis? How much will it prolong the healing process if I smoke while I have it? I just don't know which will be worse - taking a few days extra to get better or my nicotene mood-swings!

Thanks for any help :)

Right, let me just add something here...

I KNOW that cigarettes damage my health. I would have to be living under a rock NOT to know that. I've seen the black lungs in jars, i've seen the pictures of premature ageing, i've heard about people not being able to move and emphysema and cancer etc etc. Of course I have, it seems like everytime I turn a corner i'm told it, i'm in the UK - here in less than two weeks it will be illegal to smoke in enclosed public spaces, including bars, it is illegal to advertise cigarettes in any way, we're basically hating on smokers, so I don't need your warnings. Thank you for caring about my health so greatly, but really, it's a personal decision to smoke and one that I feel I put care into making, it's my vice and I need it. Yeah, okay, it'll knock 10 years off my life, but whatever, they probably woulda been crappy anyway.

Smoking will irritate your throat and could cause the condition to worsen (though it's not likely the smoking caused it in the first place). Here's some info I found:

"If you have tonsillitis, take it easy. Get plenty of rest and drink lots of fluids. You can take acetaminophen or ibuprofen to relieve any pain or discomfort. (Don't take aspirin or other products that contain aspirin, though, because these may put you at risk of developing Reye syndrome, an illness that can have serious complications.)

Call your doctor right away if your condition gets worse; for example, if you have difficulty breathing or swallowing. Also talk to your doctor if your fever comes back or if you're not feeling better in a couple of days.

Avoid smoking or anything that will irritate your throat. It's best to drink lots of liquids. You may prefer softer foods, like applesauce, flavored gelatin, or ice cream. If you don't feel like eating, try drinking liquids that contain calories, such as fruit juices, milkshakes, and soups and broths."

Gradually get rid of cig's: smoking is not good for tonsil anyway, and, in the long run, just not good for health! breathing exercise, and exercise in general, with food that builds up resistance to 'uri' , should be excellent!
