The doctor just told me that my 86yr. old mother in law has numerous blood clots in her abdomen. Does anyone know what this means?? I tried asking the dr. but you know how they are,... you can never get a straight answer. It drives me nuts!! I would like to know what to expect and when to expect it.! Has anyone had any experience with this? Thanks so much for any info. I should add that she has some in her brain also. She did have a small stroke 2 yrs. ago, so this wasnt so shocking when he told me about the brain.

a blood clot is, if you can imagine, a clump of blood. there are some situations, such as injury to the red blood cells or to the blood vessel (arteries&veins) walls that cause surrounding cells to release chemicals making the cells in the blood "sticky". so the cells stick together, forming this clot, it can travel throughout your body in your bloodstream, and it may just dissolve on it's own, but the danger is when the clot blocks blood flow (either it becomes larger or it gets stuck in a small blood vessel). no blood flow=no oxygen and this means the cells in the area will die. if the area is small or the clot is broken up in time, the damage can be minimal and the body will recover. but if there are many clots, such as in your mother-in-law's case, there is greater danger of large clots blocking flow to major areas (important brain areas, heart muscle). but even in smaller areas cell death means trouble: pain and loss of function and the effects may snowball causing very serious damage even if the area that was first involved was small or not critical. my main concern in all this, however, is that you can not get a straight answer out of your doctor, this is a serious situation, your doctor should answer ALL of your questions or refer you to someone who can. he should discuss fully the most likely causes of your mother-in-law's condition, the implications, and the treatment options, this is your mother-in-law's RIGHT as a patient, DEMAND it! if you can not get this most basic information from him i would try to get a more compassionate, more knowledgable physician. best of luck to you!

That is a pretty vague answer... I'd go back and ask him to be more specific.

There are numerous veins & arteries in the abdomen because most of your organs are there. The biggest worry about venous blood clots is having a pulmonary embolism... when the blood clot dislodges, travels to the lung and blocks blood flow, causing lung tissue death and lack of oxygen to the body.

Ask the doctor where the blood clots are and what the risks associated with these clots are... only they can give you a correct answer.

My blood clot was on my abdominal muscle. The doctors said there is not a concern for these to break up and travel. Caused extreme pain. They did a Ct Scan & MRI to verify it was a blood clot. Sent me home with pain pills, recommendation to apply heat and was told it would disperse on its on in a week or so. The clot was 3.6 cm and hurt so much and was located on the right lower abdomen, so original diagnosis was either appendicitis or diverticulitisis - before tests. If it recurs or gets unmanageable, they can consider removing surgically. I just got home today, so can't say it cleared up on its own as expected yet.

I was 19, pregnant & married when I had a PE or (Pulmonary Embolism) & 2 GMS (Grand Mal Seizures) The blood clot ended up in my right leg & traveled to my lungs. I had no clue what the inside of my body was doing & how it worked. I suffered for 3 months with a very bad swollen leg till I couldn't breath during my sleep. My chest hurt like hell!!! I was rushed to the hospital by my ex-husband. Having a PE is LIFE THREATENING cuz I almost DIED!!! Never wait to take someone to the hospital if they feel like they are going to die. I have had other blood clots after I safely had my 2 kids, of course I was on blood thinners during my pregnancies. I have to be on Warfarin for the rest of my life & I'm almost 46, my b-day is 2/20/1971.
