I was half asleep this morning when I heard a report that Menu Foods recently tested 50 dogs and cats with possible contaminated food and 7 of them died. Has anyone heard this report and can you confirm this? I am always hearing about Iams but it appears that all those brands are just as guilty.
PS: At the Peta site, there is a list of pet food companies that are cruelty free.

The point here is that they KNEW something was wrong with the food and fed it to animals anyway to see if any would get sick or die.
I can understand testing foods otherwise...I mean products are taste tested everyday by people too. This test was cruel and sick.

This did not come from PETA for crying out loud. It was on the national news and in articles in tons of newspapers. It's not a made up "PETA" fact. All I said was there was a list of cruelty free foods listed on their website. Does anyone comprehend the basic english language anymore?

This company almost makes me want to join ALF!
The only reason for them to do this was to be cheap!! Lab tests are much more expensive than just feeding it to the animals they already had around for taste testing.
I've already been in contact with HSUS, ASPCA and the DA's office from their 'home' county! This is nothing less than animal cruelty and abuse!!!!!!!
With the symptoms these animals are experiencing (and what about poor folks that eat pet food?) there has to be either a toxic oil (like rapeseed or hydraulic) or a myco-toxin (mold) present in the food. To test the toxicity by feeding it to animals instead of running a few tests for toxins is not only immoral but indefensible!!!!

No it's not just Iams.
All major companies do animal testing.Have for years.
But what does testing consist of?
Is it to see which ingredients in their food are good or could possibly cause health problems?Or are they shoving chemicals into their eyes, open wounds or grafting the head of a cat onto the rear end of a dog?
If it's the first one then I say test away.
I've been thru Purinas test site.They have cats,dogs,rabbit,goats and sheep,cows and horses,guinea pigs,etc.
They create new food formulas to feed the animals for a set period of time. The animals are checked daily for everything from their noses to their rear ends.Any and every reaction is documented.
These animals are kept in clean conditions, and are exercised daily. They have everything they need except a real home. They are'nt hurt at all.But of course that is one facility.
I wish Peta would spend more time watching the animals being tested by the FDA than the dog food companies. That's where the real gruesome stuff happens.

Take what PETA says with a grain of salt, there was no proof that the tests they showed photos of was actually Iam's and since it and other brands are all made by the same company, you can't say it was Iam's. It's sensationalism at best (or worst) and PETA have a hidden agenda, if they had their way, no one would have any pets at all.
PETA were the same people going around to shelters offering to find pets new homes, they euthanased them (untrained PETA employees) in the back of the van as they drove away and dumped them in a rubbish bin at the supermarket.
Yes most companies do animal testing, cat food is tested on cats, dog food on dogs but they have strict animal welfare practices that they must follow.
ALL companies, even those who don't test on animals learn from those who do and formulate their products similarly as they know the testing has already been done!
Quote from the link provided: "But People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (Peta), the controversial animal "rights" charity, is now horrifying people for an entirely different reason as two of its own workers face accusations of secretly killing dogs and cats." Whenever PETA is involved smell a rat!
From that article you posted, it sounds as if the MANUFACTURER, not Iam's or Hill's or Eukanuba or Purina etc conducted nor endorsed the testing. For all we know, the animals could have died during the testing from unrelated causes. Having said that, I can't see that any company would test it on an animal after it being claimed it killed animals. Indeed it would be laboratory testing on the food itself, chemical analysis, testing for bacteria, pesticides, herbicides, fungus and mould spores etc.

How would you test a pet food if you didn't try it on the animal it was intended for? I know, try it on Mikey!! When PETA is free from scandal I'll pay attention to it. As for now, not on my radar. They're dogs, people. Menu Foods has nothing to benefit by killing them off with their products. There hasn't been this much noise over any product recall for human consumption.

The majority of pet food suppliers/producers test their products on confined/caged animals.
You need to only purchase foods by company's who do not test on animals.

I DID hear it, BUT I haven't checked into it.
If the info came from PETA I would try to find another source to confirm it for sure.
Do a search on PETA, they aren't all they claim to be either!

go to www.menufoods.com and click on recall info. It will tell you the foods that are involved, but it's only wet foods to begin with.
