I just got a new comp with Vista. I know the issues with Vista and, generally speaking, I'm ok with that. However, I have back up discs from my XP system that my new system is NOT reading. This means over 5000 mp3s as well as all my digital pics and Word documents.

When I put the discs in the drive, the drive/system stalls and its as if it's reading a broken record. It occassionally crashes my comp.

Anyone have any suggestions or has seen this before? Is there a way to easily network my two towers together so I don't have to worry about discs? (Yes, regular program discs work perfectly)

Get a router (<$50) and set up a home network.

In vista, setup the Shared Folder in My Documents to be accessible over the network and copy all your stuff from XP to the Vista Shared folder.

Read the router Manual for more info AND in Start > Help and Support read about "Shared Folders"

I have not encountered that. I have Vista and it is moving data from old disks just fine. You may need a new driver for your CD/DVD drive. You said you have backup disks. Did you use some software like Nero to back them up, or did you just copy them using the Windows explorer? You may need to run in compatibility mode or get an updated backup/restrore program that is compatible with Vista.

There may be something wrong with the discs. That is the same thing that happens when i put my backup discs in. I think while they were being copied to cds it messed up but it said they were copied just fine. I wanted to cry... ALL OF THOSE FILES!

I did it with none hassle in any respect - once I instaled notice on the laptop. i replace into utilising workplace XP ( which includes notice) and it replace into all rather basic. Vista is a foul working device although.
