I understand your concern. There are two considerations: one, the drugs may need to be changed, or the dosage. Different people react in different ways to drugs, and while one may help person A, it may make person B worse. This is particularly the case with some of the new psychoactive drugs that haven't been around as long as some older ones.
Another consideration is that she may have been misdiagnosed and given the wrong medication entirely. Get a second opinion if you can. I understand your dislike of having her sectioned but a temporary arrangement for closer observation by trained professionals may be your best way forward.
I'm so sorry you have to watch your mother go through this, of course you suffer from her behaviour but also you know how distressed she is to react like this. Remember to find support from friends and family for yourself and your father at this difficult time.

It sounds like she is having anxiety problems, which is affecting everything else she does. She is probably being violent because people are dealing with her in the wrong way. I am speaking from experience here. Not the violence part, but I dealt with anxiety for a long time. I had panic attacks and ended up in the emergency room thinking I was dying. Depression is something that only medicine can cure because there really is truth in having a chemical imbalance in your brain. Anxiety on the other hand is something that a person must learn how to deal with before overcoming it. I know this sounds cheesy but there are is this program of tapes that you listen to that completely changed the way I feel. I haven't had a panic attack since and have helped others with the same issues since. The tapes are kind of expensive but they are definately worth it. All you have to do is listen to each tape twice a week. One the first side of each tape is the moderator talking about what that week is about and the second side is a recorded group session with others. Before you go out and spend money on the tapes I would reccomend you going to your local book store and picking up, From Panic to Power, by Lucinda Bassett. She is the same person who created the tapes. There is a link below. Feel free to email me with any other questions, but I really think it will be worth it all. Just having her read a chapter or two of the book a day will help her tremendously. Everything will be ok, its just hard until you get to that point. Good luck.

I think you should accompany them to see a doctor ASAP- especially if they are exhibiting signs of self-harm, loss of appetite, repetitive behaviour or comments, compulsions and such like.
The doctor will prescribe some form of mild sedative like Seraquel, Vanax, Valium or such and perhap[s put them on a course of Selective Seratonin Re-uptake Inhibitors (SSRI's) such as Paxtine to help them return to a healthy chemical balance within the brain.
I just wanted to point out that certain anxieties are in fact listed as psychiatric (medical) conditions- of which Paxtine/Paroxetine is a commonly prescribed drug.
Anxiety is a mental illness and it can be brought under control and eventually cured- but she requires medical assistance in addition to CBT- cognitive behavioural therapy.
Seek medical help as quickly as you can dear.
Remove as much stimulus as possible from your mum in the meantime- and it's very important whatever she says or however she behaves- it's not her it's the condition.
Get her to go to bed and just quietly rest- maybe watching TV but nothing anxiety provoking.
So avoid arguments, stress or tension- she is not 'mad', she is not 'mentally unfit' she simply has a very complex chemical issue at work within her brain- as much not her fault as if she had a heart condition or glandular fever.

UK answerer;
I have no answer for you, as such.
Is it possible that you can contact a local mental health group - MIND - maybe and ask their advice. I cannot speak from direct experience although I would imagine you are concerned for everyones safety.

Is your mum in an understanding frame of mind? if so maybe she will allow you (&dad) to go to the doctors and talk on her behalf, or some other way around that problem.
