The short answer is yes. The longer answer is, you need to mod your iPod before you are able to. There is something called iPod Linux which you can download for free, as it is an open source program. Basically it formats (erases) your iPod, and replaces the operating system with a modified version of Linux on it. Linux is a growing OS with more support being added everyday, even the PlayStation 3 uses Linux. With this, you are able to view movies that are un-encoded with the .avi extension. But beware, you will need at least 2.5 gigs free for this raw movie file. I have tested it myself, and it works wonders. An easier method would be to buy an iPod Video, but they're not cheap. no u can not. you need a much stronger ipod like a 80 gig or higher. you could try but i dought it wont work.
