On the TV, right before I went to call my doctor, there was a program about the over use of antibiotics.
One thing that they said is that most sore throats are caused by a virus, and of course - being a virus - will not be treated by antibiotics.

How long would it take for a virus to leave my sistem(about) I want to try to wait a few days. If I feel better I wont go to the doctors at all, and if i feel the same/am getting worse - i'll go. But just how many days should I wait?

and in the mean time, what can I do for relief?

most viruses take 10-14 days to clear out completely but you should start to feel better within 3-4 days.

for relief

-use a warm mist humidifier in your room at nite while you sleep. this will help keep the air moist and prevent your throat from becoming more dry and irritated

-suck on hard candies or ice

-gargle with warm salt water (2tsp to 8oz water)

-drink warm tea w/honey. avoid lemon b/c the acid could irritate your throat more

-take ibuprofen for pain (if not allergic to it). take 200-400mg every 6 hours as needed but no more than 1200mg in 24 hours.

bacterial throat infection is commonly referred to as strep throat and it does require antibiotics to treat it. symptoms for that are

-extremely red and swollen throat
-not able to eat, drink or even breathe without severe throat pain
-white patches are visible on back of the throat
-fever (usually high 102.0 or more)
-in severe cases, nausea and vomiting are sometimes present b/c the bacteria travels down the throat and into the stomach, causing upset.

if you have any of these symptoms make an appt to see your dr at once.

hope you feel better soon

First, gargle with warm salt water, and then if you dont mind spending a few bucks, go to the pharmacy, they have these lollipops for kids to help ease sore throats and coughs, and honestly, they work wonders!! they dont taste like medicine at all. I have used them for myself and all 3 of my kids. Also, make sure you drink plenty of fluids. Try to stay away from carbonated beverages for now and dont eat spicy foods, cause that will just irritate your throat. I would say if you are not feeling better within 72 hours, go to the doctor, but also, you need to look in your throat and check to see if you have white dots on it, if you do, sorry but you will need to go to the doctors, and get an antibiotic...white dots=strep...good luck and feel better soon

Gargling with warm salt water will help it to feel a little better. But look in the mirror and see if you have any white pockets on the inside of your throat. If you do don't wait to see the doctor. White pockets mean you have strep throat which is going around right now. You will have to get antibiotics to get rid of it. This will only get worse if you don't. You will need penicillin to heal it up. Good luck !

My son just got over a bad sore throat. He had the sore throat for 2-3 days, then it turned into major sinus congestion. He went to the doctors on the 5th day, and was told that he has an ear infection. Do you have a fever? He didnt, but he took ibuprofen and drank lots of cold liquids. That seemed to help him alot. I hope you feel better soon.

Use antiseptic mouth wash (my fav right now is listerine advanced) and gargle it for at least a minute in the back of your throat. Alternate that and warm salt water. The listerine really helps a lot.

Apple cider vinegar...it kills the bacteria that cause strep throat. (cheaper than doctor visit)....gargle with this about 4 times a day. Rinse mouth with plain water afterwards to prevent damage to tooth enamel.

EDIT:
Mix 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar with 8 ounces of warm water....gargle

For temporary relief
>gargle with warm saline or warm water then put some salts to it, 3x a day or when necessary.

Aside from sorethroat what other signs or symptoms do you have? If you have a fever, you should consult your doctor right away.
