Aww, everyone will give you different tips on how to potty train your puppy, there are so many different methods, our lil one was stubborn and it took her a little bit, but the key for us was taking her out every 30 mins.. and a lot of patience. They long for your approval, we would put her nose in her 'mess' give her a light tap on the bottom and tell her she was bad .. it crushed her .. all is well now and we LOVE our shihtzu!!! Good Luck !! (Oh, P.S. the new woolite carpet cleaner gadget for 1.00 cleans the stains the best! )

You need to keep the puppy on a leash and take her out every 15-20 minutes. If you can leash her, they crate her during those times.

I don't recommend crate or paper, pad or indoor training of any kind, she needs to learn it's not ok to pee inside. I have heard so many people have problems with dogs later peeing or pooping on their kids books or that business document that fell on the floor etc because they learnt this way.

If you go to the link below, you will need to sign up first, look for the post by Karen of West Wind Training, (There are quite a few on potty training there. I have used this method successfully many times (Thanks Karen) including with adult rescues who had never been in a house, let alone had basic training. One of these dogs was 12 years old, he took longer than a 3 year old I trained at the same time, she got it in a few days. The thread is in the Dog training subsection and it's titled Min Pin, Potty training, the same principles apply no matter what age or breed!

Good luck, if you stick to this method, I guarantee it will work. At first when you read it, you will probably do what I did and roll your eyes and think yeah right! Give it a chance, she really knows her stuff!

First, I am guessing that you have had her thoroughly examined by a vet and there are no physical problems.

I am also guessing you have been using an enzyme cleaner like "Nature's Miracle" to clean the spots and remove any scent of urine.

If you are not confining her to a crate, I suggest you start with this.

Take her out to potty like you would with any other puppy---after meals and drinking, after playtime. Treat her several times for going potty outside with the yummiest treats in the world. Stay out there with her and keep her on a leash for potty. If it is nice weather where you live, let her run around and play or take her for a walk only AFTER she potties.

If you feed her and take her out and she doesn't potty (and you think she needs to) bring her and put her in her crate for 10-15 minutes and then back out and when she potties--lots of treats.

Do not have her loose in the house unless you are right there with her. The goal is to for her to have access to the house when she a)has an empty bladder/bowels and b) is supervised.

I have heard this is a difficult breed to housetrain. If you got her from a good breeder, call them.

Another option is to call the local shih tzu rescue and ask them for help. I have been told that many of this breed are given up partly because of housebreaking issues. Therefore, I am certain a breed rescue would have TONS of experience with this problem.

Think of it this way: If this is a common problem, the average rescue group has probably housetrained dozens if not 100+ dogs and many of them older than yours.

Try www.petfinder.com to find a group near you or go to the American Shih Tzu Club of America rescue contact page:

Good luck----and remember she is only 7 months old. :)

That is a Shih Tzu for you..To me they are the hardest pet to housebreak . People ask me how are they at house training. And I do tell them that they are hard to house train. But then again, I keep in touch with people who buy my dogs and some tell me they were the easiest to house break. People ask me when they buy my puppy are they house broken.. I just laugh and say yeah right lol. The trouble with them is that they are so cute for their own good. Stubborn as heck too. But you got to love a Shih Tzu's they are the most lovable dog I think there is and they are like potato chips you just can't have one. Maybe that will explain why I have 8.

All I can tell you is keep add it ..One day it may click in their head what you want them to do. Mine just look at me as if to say humm I forget is it out side or inside you want me to potty.

I have a Shih Tzu for 9 yrs. When we got him @ 8 weeks old, we took him outside on a leash lots, gave him a treat back in the house with lots of praise after he did his jobs. At night he was placed in his kennel in the house & again on a leash outside to do his jobs and get another treat. In a week he was fully trained and now always goes to the door to go out for his jobs. He sometimes will sneeze at us to let us know he wants out or for food. Good luck.

Have you heard of Puppy Pads? you leave one on the floor and when puppy wees or poos lift her/him onto it. Gradually move it nearer to the back door, over a period of days, or weeks. They eventually learn to go outside. My Daughter used this method breeding Pugs and it worked really well. Hope this helps.
Unfortunately we did not know of these when we rescued our Staffy. After several accidents in doors, my friend suggested rewarding her every time she 'went' in the garden. The upshot of this is, that unless we watch her, all the time (and we don't know if she's been or not) she cons us out of a bicky about 15 times a day!
