All I can say is that from my experience that is not the case.
I have found that it really depends on where and when you go.
If you are looking for a short flight, then I would suggest first looking to see if there are any low cost carriers flying to the destination. Most reduce their prices the closer it gets to the departure date, although I know of one that actually increases. On that basis wait until the last minute.
Another option might be to do a search for holidays to your destination, often holiday companies have seats linked to beds. If they cannot sell the package they then offer seat only but again this tends to be last minute.
If your journey is further afield then it is probably best to try a flight specialist (consolidator) they are often the cheapest as airlines give them attractive prices based on the number of passengers they provide and it doesn't really matter what day of the week it is.
Hope the above helps, but remember you may think you have got a good deal from the internet but test it by speaking to a travel agent or operator. Although they may not always advertise the fact most will price match or ever price beat.
Good luck

Tue after midnight ont he east coast. This is when airlines attempt to fill up their seats quickly and will drop fares for flights for a few hours.
I have a little travel blog that will help you find the cheapest airfare! Use the Kayak search bar on the right side to find the cheapest airfare!
The blog is about travel to and around Europe, but you can use the Kayak bar to find really cheap flights anywhere in the world!

Very useful article on the topic:
The art of landing a great airfare
Source: Gerri Willis, CNN Money ( Free Registration )
It’s never too early to think about a spring get-away or start planning your summer vacation. Last year was the pits for air travelers, from lost luggage to long delays. But we’ll tell you what you can expect this year and how you can get ready.
1: Prepare for fares. Here’s some news we can all use. Prices on domestic flights may be a bit lower this season, especially on major routes, according to Anne Banas of SmarterTravel.com. Delta and Northwest will be exiting bankruptcy this year and most low-cost carriers will be updating their equipment and adding seats. Now the bad news: fares to Europe will be about 20 percent higher during the peak summer travel time. Demand is expected to be very high, according to Banas. Add this to the weak dollar abroad - and Europe looks like a very expensive bet this season.
2: Get in now. Ideally you should book your flight eight weeks out, according to SmarterTravel.com....
