I have a shih tzu, and now foxes! I have noticed a fox in my garden over the past couple of days now, i dont know whether he has made a nest under my shed or not cos he keeps coming back to it and my dog is alot more curious about what is under there now. Just want to know if I need to worry about it? and how do I get rid of them? Im worried about letting my dog in the garden, would the fox go for him? My dog ran out in the garden last night and chased the fox, who ran down the garden and up over the fence, but would the fox ever turn on the dog, he is only small. And would he catch any diseases from them or anything?
Hope this waffle makes some sort of sense!

I have a Shitzu too, now I am no authority on animal life and I dont know if a fox would turn on the little dog or not, but I wouldnt take that chance. Call animal control and they can set up a trap that will not hurt the fox and then come and remove it and put it back where he belongs... or if you live in 'redneckville' like I do, have someone with a fox hound or coon hound come and get it out - just the presence of one of these hound dogs for a day or two should keep the foxes away. I would think if the fox and shitzu did end up in a bit of a scrap the fox would win... :( Good Luck!

I hope your dog is well up todate on his vaccines, Foxes san get rabies and distemper, and carry fleas and ticks.
You can contact the department of Natural Resources for info on removing
As for who would win a fight, the fox would, even if it was smaller, a fox has to be in top physical condition to survive and catch its own meals, the ordinary pet dog is a couch potato and even though you may think it is healthy and fit, it will will not close to top form athletically as a wild canine.
Just the give an example one dog foster parent has a 90 lb greyhound who she adopted 2 year prior overall she watched it weight it had a year for running in so it appeared to be in great shape physically, she then got a fresh off the track 50 lb female, a couple of days later they got into a scrap over food, and that little female beat the crap out of the male putting him in the vet hospital for a week fighting for his life while she had next to no injuries.
Chances are the fox will try first the escape but if cornered it will try to protect inself, so you may want to take you dog out on leash until the fox finds a new home

The fox is probably timid and afraid of the dog, but I think if the fox was cornered it could hurt your dog.

The fox is strong but timid! the fox is like afraid of something that the shih tzu might do to him. the shih is small but terrible. the shih is like our neighbor's dog he's strong but "very" terrible!
