quite often pain just accompanies life , people die or leave or other horrible things happen that we don't have control over. we have 2 choices-- we wallow in it becoming whiney victims, hiding from life. or We work through it,find understanding and use the pain to stretch and strengthen ourselves.
then there is pain we cause ourselves by not accepting reality. by not letting go of illusions of what life should be,holding onto selfish expectations.
again there are the same 2 choices.
i fought reality for years trying to work my version of it over top of it until the pain became overwhelming.
i m not sure what you mean by pain as a touchstone but it surely was an incentive to look for answers other than what i,d been using. the cessation of pain is how i knew i,d found the correct answer. My correct answer came in the form of God who over the years has restored me to sanity.
I finally have Peace in my life and serenity that comes from not fighting for control but through surrender.and accepting what comes as Gods will. ><> peace of God be with you ><>

Yes.
A touchstone is a device to measure. The spiritual idea is to let go of what holds one back from harmony.

As pain is felt, whatever the form, this may be measured against the feeling of serenity.

Joy and serenity are objectives.

Pain is usually lost incrementally as one lets go of an attachment.

Change is inevitable.
Touchstone

1. A gauge or measurement of quality, 2. a mark or measure, 3. a standard by which other subjects can be measured or evaluated, 3. an item by which subsequent reference may be made, 4. a test of achievement, excellence, or genuineness.

Discussion: A hard black stone used to test the quality of gold or silver.

Life's events can break a person down or it may refine a person.
