This was a huge step for this guy. And she wouldn't give him a yes or no answer. And then she would not answer his calls, just let the machine take his messages.

Why be so cruel? Doesn't even the most inappropriate guy deserve the kindness of a yes or no answer? Why would a girl in her late 20's do this? I really like her, I don't understand why she would be that way.

This may be the last time my friend asks anyone out.

I think she didn't know how to tell him that she wasn't attracted to him to his face. Instead, she's hoping he'll get the hint by ignoring him. It's twisted logic if you think about it. She's didn't tell him to his face out of fear of hurting him, yet is hurting him by not telling him anything at all. It's cruel and immature, but she probably doesn't know how else to handle it. :)

Yeah, that is rough...though she probably didn't intend to be cruel. Anyway, if you can, try to help your friend spin this. Help him see: nothing ventured, nothing gained...and if this is the worse that happens when he asks a girl out, he can face it. The fear of rejection often keeps great guys from pursuing women they like: but the reality of rejection doesn't have to be so scary. He tried. He now knows this can happen...but, so what? The world is still in its orbit and he will be fine. Her opinion shouldn't have too much power over him. She doesn't even know him. It was a huge step for him. He needs to take another, and if necessary, another...until the fear of rejection isn't so much to overcome. After all, hasn't this happened to many guys? I know it's happened to me. Nobody wins the heart of every woman. I'd tell him: You take it in stride. You don't let it stop you from trying again. And eventually, when you come across the right woman, the one who sees you for YOU, you'll have gained the courage to make the most of your potential mutual happiness.

That's not cruel. Her laughing in his face, now that would be cruel. It's not her job to be nice to your cousin, you know. Allow your cousin to take some responsibility.
