Bound's hubby here:
You can get a .22 rifle for as low as $159 in our area (New Jersey). However, just any .22 may not do. You do not say what you want your .22 for. Plinking, target shooting, small game... we don't know. .22s are like high power rifles. They can be mission specific. You can get an entry level Ruger 10/22 (plinker) for about $160. You can get a Savage Mark II FVT (entry target rifle) for about $600. You can get a Remington bolt gun (hunting or informal target) for about $400. Or you could by an Anschutz 2x14 (Olympic grade target rifle) for about $2400. Just any .22 won't do every job, so you have to know, in your mind, exactly what you want your rifle to do before you buy your rifle.
Good luck.

The best one to buy is the Ruger 10/22. It is semi-auto and comes with a 10 round magazine. You can buy 25-30 round magazines aftermarket for $15-$25. The gun is $170-$300 depending on the model.
I bought a Mossberg Plinkster for $79 the day after Thanksgiving at Dick's Sporting Goods. The gun was regularly $160, but it was on sale for half-off. If you shot around you might be able to get a deal like that.
You can probably buy a Marlin or other .22 for $150 at Wal-Mart or K-Mart.

How much do you want to spend? You can probably get one second-hand for under US$100, or you can get a fine bit of workmanship for well over $1000. For general use, you'll do fine with a new rifle in the $150-$350 range.

It really all depends on what brand rifle you want. I would say go with either a henry lever action which would around 175.00 or go for the savage that would cost around 250.00. Both are very good rifles and have the sme accuracy.

You can get a savage .22 semi auto for about 100 dollers on sale usualy with the acu trigger system which is adjustable depending on your shooting style, you can go from 6 pounds of trigger pull to a feathery 1.5 pounds of pull, it is a nice gun for the money I own 3 of them
