You can try qwest or centurytel, I know the have service in california, as far as your local area not sure. But you can always do a search for LEC ( Local Exchange Carrier ). All you will have to do then is to see which ones offer service in your area, and compare plans.
Well hope this helps

I feel ya! I detest SBC (now AT&T).

I went with MCI. Cheaper, more features included in the calling packages and MUCH better customer service.

ATT&T phone books have a list of other providers who are not affiliated with them at the first pages of the phone book.
There is also 18004APHONE I don't know if they are close to you though, but that's just off of the top of my head, Good luck!

Past landline service your options include:

Cell phone.

VoIP, assuming you have broadband service. Cable modem preferred. However, you may have to kiss the toad and get DSL (FiOS, if available) from your dreaded landline phone provider to get VoIP service.

So much for choice...

Same sort of problem here in central Florida. BellSouth went back into at&t, and I already dislike sprint, so now have cable-based digital land phone from my cable company. Might this also work for you?
