First of all not all planes use the double prongs and most nowdays will accept a single plug. They started using this two prong thing long, long before most people even owned a set of headphones.

Yes once upon a time it was of course to keep track of headphones but in this day and age they give out cheap ones and are not reused.

But either way if you want to use your better more comfortable ones you can buy an adaptet for next to nothing. Or any travel headset will come with one.

It's probably one of two things, either

1.) I think it is probably to prevent people from taking the headphones and using them at home. Airlines generally take and reuse the headphones again and again. its either that or

2.) Because the two prongs actually serve the purpose of keeping the plane up in the air! Oh yes! They take the sound, with the one prong, run it through your head where it picks up your thought patterns, run them BACK INTO the arm rest with the other prong , then along special vibratory wires into a converter that takes that energy and CONVERTS it into a form of kinetic energy that heps the jet turbines to keep spinning! Yes that is why it is imperative for EVERYONE on the plane to do their part and WEAR their headphones! LISTEN to the MUSIC ***USE YOUR HEADPHONES**** It COULD save your life!!!!

Take your pick maybe they're BOTH true who knows!

That way you have to buy the headphones being distributed by the flight attendant for $5.00. You can generally still use your own headphones, though you may only get sound out one side, or, as I generally find, only get one channel out both sides.

The basic answer is GREED. Nothing more.

It's the old 'two-pronged attack'...first, they make it impossible for you to use any electrical devices by either making it TSA's job to cause as much hassle and discomfort as possible to carry them, so you must see their movies; and secondly they make $5 for headset that either doesn't work, the jacks are jacked, or you'll either lose it at your earliest convienience. Nice hustle, if you can pull it off!
