Too many people don't see it that way anymore. Distract them, give them a time-out, etc. The majority of these do-good experts don't have children. Boots in the a** is what they need from time to time, nothing wrong with it.

Isn't it funny when we were kids our parents could beat our as s right there in the streets with a leather belt in front of God and everybody and no one give a care.. and today when we raise our voice to our children WE ARE AWFUL PARENTS. I know when I had my butt whipped I was not to do it again and most of the time I made sure it Never happened again.
They are just to out of control these days and everyone is out to point a finger at something so they can feel more at ease with the mistakes they make. I do not have a problem with correcting my child in public.. usually all it takes is for me to say wait till we get home and you want to play your games or you can choose which corner you would like to sit in when you get home. He is ADHD and spanking doesn't help. Don't get me wrong he still occasionally gets one or two here and there.
But things are sure a heck of alot different from when we (30+ yrs ago) grew up.

It's people like those who don't believe in spanking anymore that our kids are outta control if they'd keep their mouth shut about how we dicipline our children, we could have a more peaceful life with our kids and maybe we could make them better people but, until those who wanna let them get away with every thing in the book pipe down we'll never have any say so about how we raise our own kids. To me we don't have say so over our children the law and these other people who want our kids taken from us because of a spankin they are the reason we can't punish em the way we want to.

I guess it comes down to what your priorities are: superficially perfect angels, or children who grow up with real values and decision-making skills, and who have a deep loving relationship with their parents. I was spanked as a child, and all it did was make me afraid of getting caught- not make beter decisions or change my behavior. I grew up fearful, not respectful, of my parent. Not to say that my mother did a bad job or that I have warped morals (though I may), but spanking does nothing to help a child learn what the right behavior is that is expected of them.

It is taboo for the same reason you can't hit another adult - physical violence is assault - and adults can at least protect themselves. There are other methods of discipline that actually work - please try to imagine how frightened a child is when an adult hits them - especially a parent who they love and depend on.
