The family dog, a 14 year old lab/german sheppard mix named Tobie, has been seeming more and more like he's done with living. We were planning on taking him to the vet to be put down (we feel that he's suffering too much) but now suddenly tonight, its about 3 in the morning and I couldn't sleep, I hear him whining and crying. I come out to see what's wrong and he is shivering uncontrobably and gets upset whenever I leave the room for whatever reason. I think he may be dying but I'm not entirely sure. It is too late (or early) to call anybody. I gave him some water and he drank it and I covered him with a blanket to help with the shivers, but I'm still worried. Is there anything else I can maybe do to help him?

He's stopped shivering now and appears to be sleeping. In his old age he has become increasingly afraid of the dark. I think part of the problem is that, without thinking, I turned out all the lights and forgot his nightlight when I went to bed. I hope my initial thoughts turn out wrong, and for the time being he is sleeping comfortably.

I'm so sorry for you. Why don't you sit with him and comfort him? Just knowing that you are beside him will help with him emotionally. He has been your best friend for 14 years. He has been there when you needed him, and now he needs you.

Just sit with him and pet him. Bring some water to him and let him know how much he means to you. If he is still with us by morning, take him to the vet...not necessarily to have him euthanised, but to find out what is wrong.

I'm so sorry that your dog isn't doing well, I would take him to the vet and make sure nothing is going on that the vet can give meds for. I have a 14 year old dog also and we was going to put her down until we found out from the vet for sure what was wrong with her and put her on meds and now she is doing really good. Good luck and let us know how it goes.

Never ever put your dog down without a proper diagnosis and let the doc be the Judge if your best friend can be saved with some medication!!! I wouldn't put a menmber of my family down without a fight. I think you did fine by putting a blanket over him, call the vet's office and tell them you are on your way in with an emergengy!!! If you have an emergency clinic in your area, go now, if not, call the vet's office and see if someone is ther taking emergency calls! Don't you let these reps over the phone tell you that you have to have an appointment, this was told to me by a vet years ago he says call and say you are ion your way in and bring him. I hope he did not eat that contaminated food that is so wide spread. I talked to vet today and doc said that is is more than originally thought. It is some toxin the vets believe but what ever it is, get your dog in there. he would do it for you if he could! please. Good luck!!!

I think you should stay with him tonight and comfort him. It sounds like he really needs you most right now, so i hope you stay by his side. Before you put him down I think it would be a good idea to actually see what wrong with him eg blood test or something else. Whatever his problem is it could be cured, I personaly would sleep better if I knew I put him down if nothing could have been done to save him.
