I bought my daugher a steering wheel with lots of little activities around it. Perfect - kept her very amused. A portable DVD is useful maybe but I'm not an advocate of sticking child infront of TV - I'm sure it will be suggested though!

Yes, we've all been there and it's a nightmare!
I like the suggestions of a toy steering wheel (might try that one myself!).
We always make sure the back of the car is full of little books and soft toys to help keep young travellers entertained. The interactive teddies which sing to you or talk to you are worth their weight in gold. Also try putting on some children's songs (it will drive you mad but at least it will get you there!)
Finally, do not forget a large supply of snacks and drinks - bananas or fruit pre-chopped and put in a tub, raisins, biscuits etc.
If you're journey is 3 hours try and stop half way and stretch your legs - a toddler can wear themselves out in about 5 minutes so have a run round and perhaps you will be rewarded with a sleeping beauty for the last leg of your journey.
Take care and have fun :)

I am not one who usually allows a lot of TV time, but we make 8-10 hour trips every few months to visit the grandparents, and the in car DVD has been a lifesaver. I collect some of my 3 year old's favorite characters and we head out on our way. She also enjoys books, children's music, and any leap frog toy. There is a my first leap pad that has interactive books he may enjoy. It may also help to take a break about half way through the trip at a park or rest area with an open space where he can move around some. My little one can make it about 2 hours (entertained)in the car seat before she gets frustrated.
Good luck and have a safe trip.

I got my son (when he was a yr old) a V-Tech toy steering wheel, with key and motor sounds. It even had a horn. Small, convenient, good toy to have. He can "practice" driving. What does he like to do normally? Is there a small toy or two you culd bring, that he really likes? And maybe a toy he normally doesn't play with, but might enjoy on the trip? Singing is fun too. And talking with him. It will go by quickly enough. Take care. And drive safe!

Bring books and several of his favorite play toys. Just don't give him everything at once. When he is bored bring out a new one. Try playing " I Spy" my 2 1/2 year old son loves that game. It keeps him looking out the window or in the car to try and keep me guessing! It's a great way to learn colors, shapes, ect. Good luck on your drive!! P.S. He may just fall asleep because of the length of a ride!! Have a safe trip!

there is nothing on gods green earth that will keep him entertained for 3 hours in the back of the car LOL, what i suggest is this, take plenty of his toysand change them at regular intervals, also regular stops to relieve boredom, failing that, give him medised so he WILL sleep LOL (kidding about the medised btw, ive had a rough night with my own 2 and a half year old)
