It really depends. You have some factors to take into consideration, ie. will it be an inside or outside dog? Do you have children? How much space do you have? etc. Many dogs have different needs for example the Dalmatian is energetic and a little high strung and not a really good dog to have if you have children. Border Collies are very loyal and intelligent, but they are herding dogs, that is what they do and they need a lot of space. Your best bet is to find a few different breeds that you may be interested in and research them.
You can check out The AKC for info on all the breeds at
http://www.akc.org/index.cfm?nav_area=homepage
Also, consider adopting a pet from your local humane society. The people who work there have tons of experience with dogs and can help you find the best dog that suits your needs. They also check all of their animals for temperament. and make recommendations as-to whether or not a particular pet might be a good match for you or not. Who know you may find a perfect match that will love you 4ever for saving them.
Last but not least, take your time finding your perfect match, hopefully it is going to be a lifelong companion. It is not a decision you have to make on a spur of the moment, the pets of the world are always going to be there. Unfortunately, It's the people that own them that are the problem.
I hope you find you perfect new family member ;=)

Hi thats a good question, i have 4 dogs 3 are chihuahuas and are very loyal but are not for children as such as they are to small then i have a retriever cross border collie and she is just lovely i have a 4 yr old daughter who gives my big dog sarah a hell of a time and she protects my little ones , she loves people and enjoys eveyones company, she hasent a nasty bone in her body, i have always said border collies are a lovely natured animal and saraj proves it for me. my mother inlaw always thought labradores were the best placid dog and after living with her for a couple of months she has now changed her mind she says sarah is by far the best natured dog she has seen for being placid and happy go lucky. her labrador though is very snappy and not trust worthy at all. mainly though a dogs nature has a lot to do with how its owner treats them and if they are a work breed or show breed or what ever breed it may be they are all so different. so its a really hard question but collies are known for being loyal pets and a very good nature.

If you don't mind the size, try a Newfoundland. I live in a home with a small yard. I have 5 children and 3 newfies. I don't have any real problems at all. The dogs are outside most of the day and at night they come in and go to sleep. Weekly grooming and slow walks are all that's really needed for them, and because of their slow metabolizm, they won't eat you out of house and home. Do a little research and then make up your mind.
