I wondered how God could allow little babies to be born into poverty and starvation, I'm still no closer to an acceptable answer, Give me an answer that satisfies me. Are newborns not entirely innocent?

Think I should just add at this point, after much deliberation and consideration I have journeyed from being raised Catholic, to agnostic and am now a very content atheist. just wondered how Christians could possibly answer this satisfactorily for themselves.

Wow so much ignorance, contraceptive, you fool, have you ever ventured into the third world? Do you know anything about the continent Africa, Another thing in the few areas of Africa that so called civilisation has reached catholism is the main religion, which does not allow contraception. And for the contributer who said God takes care of babies by allways ensuring the Mother has milk to nurture etc. no he does not, emaciated babies die of starvation every minute of every day.

Only one answer- I feel your pain. The world is so vast and there is, was, and always will be, starvation. Some starvation is the result of nature, wars and power. Can understand what your saying, contraception rather than starvation, which is the lesser of the two evils?.. In the end the individual has to choose. The third world can be very primitive and the western world has an abundance as well as corruption. Many a person said 'where was God in Auchswitz'? Many said 'suffering alongside us' Jesus healed those who were sick when on earth, he first fed them then preached to them. We have to try and alleviate the suffering of people while we can. Life is never fair anyway and nature can be quite cruel. I help as much as possible, that is all we can do.

The Divine has nothing to do with it. Babies are created by two people having sex, not by the Divine. Yes it is a shame that babies are brought into this world when there is little or no chance of survival within third world nations. But you must also realize that the reason there is so much famine and poverty in those nations is because we as humans allow it. If we all used Nature's resources more wisely and took the time to help one another then the world wouldn't be in the situation it has become. Too many people look to the Divine as a scapegoat for what is wrong in the world instead of doing what they can to fix what we have made wrong in the world.

God did not create poverty and starvation, man did. Do you know that humans harvest enough food to actually feed the whole world, we just choose not to.

We are all on our own path, even the souls that are born into poverty and starvation, their life lessons are just very different to yours at the moment.

You can make a difference though, if you feel passionately about this you could get involved in charity work or even go over to a third world country and help build schools, plant seeds and harvest crops, become a nurse and dedicate your life to helping the sick.

- If this issue has haunted you since you were a little girl, maybe you are here to make a difference?

You could even pay a certain amount of your wages directly to a charity to sponsor a child in Africa.

Good luck.

Well as a Muslim we belive everyone born comes with their own destiny, But as for for ur question, these babies born there are also for us to take on board that we must do something about this, we must help those poor parents, i mean would it hurt if every rich /or well off person kinda adopted a family in the third world country and gave a lil every month .... surely we wouldnt lose out would we?, The problem is not as big as the soloution all we need to do is look inside our pockets im sure we can spare couple of pounds to a poor family,

What god?

If there was would he not make it rain more on them and less on flooded areas. Provide more fertile soil etc?

Or is it the arguement that it is part of god's challenge for people to over come these survival issues.

Did god not intervene with the Floods? surely we are well over due some cleansing now?

"they should use contraceptives or be castrated." what are you on about, over population of Africa and the like is caused by Religion, they forbid the use of contraception, causing massive population growths and the spread of hiv/ aids, are you telling me GOD WANTS CHILDREN IN AFRICA TO BE BORN WITH AIDS, INTO 1 PARENT FAMILIES AND BE ORPHANED TO AIDS BY THE TIME THEY ARE 10. Wake up, forget your cosy western chuch society, donating to your roof etc.. get to where the suffering is and see what religion is really doing to them.

I think if you live in little village, with no tv, newpapers, radio then you might be excused for thinking religion had some value or truth, but anyone with even a few years education should be ashamed for backing it. The money locked away in the Catholic churches property, gold and art, the Protestant Churches banks and land, could do so much for the people you claim are looked after by god,

So far as you are seeking happiness in this world you are a staunch theist only.

You may like to call yourself, a catholic, turned agnostic, turned atheist or for that matter any thing else.

See we should understand very clearly that when we are talking God , the relationship is with our souls only and not our bodies.

The bodies being perishable, God is not concerned with it. The bodies are made by the relationships of our parents.
Let them take pride of their perishable body creation.

The soul in the body is filled by the God. The body becomes active because of that.

The task is to fulfill the needs of the soul. We care for our bodies only which is perishable. We forget to care for our souls, which is eternal. Human body is important, because it is in this body only that we can achieve the eternal and infinite happiness. We have not experienced that happiness so far and ignorantly relate our materialistic possessions, to be the approach to the happiness that we actually are secretly aspiring for.

Poverty, starvation, death and destruction etc are the events and have happened since eternity.

I was raised a Catholic, though I am not now particularly religious, however ...

If God made us and everything around us, he also gave us free will. So it's not God that makes things happen, it's the outcome of the actions of other humans. It's like a parent (God) bringing up a child (humanity) - they teach them everything they can to help them in life, but the child has to go off in to the world and make their own mistakes - the watching parent shouldn't intervene if the child is to learn, even though it hurts the parent to see their child suffering. The real question is - how can we learn from the situation and try to prevent it from happening to future generations?

Are you saying that a god, up in a heaven or somewhere else, should come here to earth and do something about a problem which is right in front of your nose?

Poverty and starvation are a function of inequality, brought about by greed and selfishness.

As reported last week, we in the U.K. throw away one third of the food we buy.

Are you saying we should carry on regardless, and let a god sort it out?

Who is it that should get off their arses and do something? Is it god, or is it us?

Are we just so complacent, lazy, and inconsiderate that we want some other power to come and sort out the mess we are making (without inconveniencing us - of course).

I'm not Christian, but I do enjoy theological questions.

The role of God, if you accept he exists, is not to create an enjoyable experience of existence - that's what's heaven is for. Life on Earth is to learn lessons, however hard they may be.

As people we see children as innocent because we have to. It evokes the response to care for them that increases their likelihood of survival. But everybody born gets a lifetime. If a poor child, starving and disadvantaged, is selfish and hateful then that is still against God. And their actions, according to Christian tradition, will define their afterlife reward.

As I understand it, that is the Christian tradition (broadly). Now, personally, I don't believe a word of it but to me, the fact that children suffer does not logically disprove God. It just confirms how we view children and what we believe they should be entitled to in terms of quality of life.

what about Sodom and Gomorrah? there were infant babies there and children in the cities. why would God just let them all died with all the other people who were the real sinners of that place? infant babies are not sinners, they don't know right from wrong, but yet God said that there were no one but lot and his family that should be saved so he sent an angel and helped them escape but no one else! you should look else where if you want to find real reasons for why we are here on this earth.
