everyone on the west side of the state thinks the people on the eastern side of the state are backward hillbillies. So, can we ever expect to get along with other countries/groups if we can't even show tolerance within a state? Or is this just a bad example because, well, it's Kentucky?

the evolutionary strategy of quickly defining ingroup and outgroup is working against us now. We should discard it. Sadly, most of it happens underneath the hood so it is hard to get at. Give us a couple of generations ;)

Well, my people are from eastern Ky. and I lived there in the hills when I was a little girl. We WERE backward hillbillies. But those are the fondest memories of my childhood. I can say that these "backward" hillbillies epitomize the 'can do' American spirit and have true values in life. I am not ashamed of my roots, in fact I am proud to be an Appalachian hillbilly. Of course, eastern Ky. is quickly catching up with the rest of the country as far as economic development goes.
