The word dam and the word damn have different origins and meanings.

1. Dam refers to a device or to barrier used to stop the flow of water. It is thought to be derived from an Old English word "fordemman" which meant "to stop up".

2. Damn is derived from an ancient root word "dap" meaning both a "feast" and "expense". The root early Latin "dapnom" became the classical Latin "damnum" meaning "damage". It could also be related to the Sanskrit root "dambh" meaning "harm".

From these roots came the terms "condemn", "damnified" (an obsolete adjective meaning damaged), and the word "damaged". Words such as "condemned" and "damned" were originally used as legal terms meaning "found guilty" the religious meaning came later.
