There are loads of backpacking places but they can be real dives, especially near to big cities like Brisbane.

Avoid like the plague those that attract Brits - I had so much stuff stolen from my bag and they leave the places filthy. They also tend to camp down for months because they can get jobs on working holiday visas.

In Queensland don't miss out on one of the best experiences. Some of the all inclusive resorts have a back packer bunk lodge to "keep the number up". You pay the same as elsewhere but get to use all of the facilities like pools etc.
