Here is the recipe I use. It's very easy.

Decorating Icing:

1 1/2 cups butter ( not margarine)
1/2 cup shortening ( I use Crisco)
4 cups icing sugar
1 egg white
1 teaspoon vanilla
2 teaspoons milk

Cream butter and shortening together. Gradually add icing sugar, then egg white, then vanilla, then milk.
If it gets too soft while decorating, place it in the fridge for about 10 minutes to firm it up again.
I also use the gel to tint the icing, I have never tried the liquid food coloring.
Good luck!!
