In biblical times, before widespread Sanitaion, lightly fermented wine was the staple of choice because the alcohol killed certain pathogens. Drinking any old water lying around would likely make you sick.
So when Jesus turns the water into wine, in this context, he's not doing it to make it more tasty and fun to drink, but in fact turning something not drinkable into something drinkable.
many religions forbid alcohol when there are so many references to wine in the bible because those religions aren't based on the bible.

I assume it's a case of erring on the side of caution, since while not forbidding the consumption of alcohol, the Bible says that getting really drunk is a sin. Especially since it leads to people doing so many other stupid things. So rather than take the chance, they just don't drink at all.

I am a Wiccan , but know a bit about this.. In times of yore they made wine, yes, but the alcohol content was a lot lower than we make today..In other words you could drink some or a lot of it all day and you wouldn't fall off your perch.. Needless to say they also made wine that would get you very pi**ed as our wine does today.. It was a very social thing in those days to offer bread and wine to a guest as this was about the best you could offer and in those days, honour and respect was paramount... Blessed Be .. )O(

Yeah, there's biblical precedent for alcohol but you're going to hell for it anyhow and that's all there is too it. So get over it, dude.

Back then they didn't allow the wine to ferment and turn into alcohol. Basically they are drinking grape juice.
