Kids. No adult with half a brain would enter your home and take a CD player and knives. Unless they were a junkie who figured that they could get some quick cash at a pawn shop for them.
Burglars are traditionally stupid when they consider these items as loot. For the hell of it check any local pawnshop. They've also been known to be stupid enough to pawn stuff like this under their real names. Good luck.

Remember that every State has differing elements defining crimes. As a rule of thumb though, burglary carries a heavier penalty if the propagator is armed. Usually burglars are caught on entering or exiting as this is the most visible time, they know this. Therefore, they break in, unarmed, and immediately find a weapon. Since the kitchen usually has the most sharp, heavy or dangerous items, that is the usually the first stop. Why he took the knives with him on exit? Got excited and forgot he had them, was scared off (fits if the only other item was the CD Player), decided not to rob you,...... perhaps we will never know.
Interviews with convicts produced more insight into their thinking process;
They are more frightened of an armed homeowner than of the police (armed-firearms), because the homeowner will probably be mad and scared......
Most burglarized houses are cased and specifically chosen due to lack of defense (vacation), valuables and/or occupants (non-threatening)
Best is, since you were already a victim, is to contact your local police and see how you may make your residence more formidable, and to start a "neighborhood watch" with your neighbors.
I do not intend to frighten you but I need not add the reason he took them (knives) in the first place.
