Keep track of how many days a week you need to take an anti acid.
If you go to your local health food store you should be able to get a papaya extract that will be the most gentle on your system. If those don't work try something simple like Tums or Rolaids, and use only the smallest dosage needed to relieve the acid.
You may want to even keep a notebook at first. Take the food you eat and see if you can find trigger that set off you acid. Sometime it's certain food, other times it could be that you need to eat.
If you stomach thinks it's time to eat it will start producing acid, and if you don't eat it could become uncomfortable. An anti acid will work for a little while, but you should just eat something instead.
If need anti acids more than a few times a week you should track your food and beverage intake for a week or two, documenting everything you put in you mouth then go to the doctor and talk about what's going on.
Prolonged acid reflux will cause damage which could even lead to cancer.
The best anti acid is the most mild form that works. Sometimes all it takes is a few crackers and milk.
Food is a great medicine.

well antacids as basic in nature, (i meant the acids and bases). So peppermints are mildly basic, so they should make you feel better for some time. salts like Eno and maybe chew-tablets like Gelusil works good. Eno and Gelusils are not bitter, they are sometimes sweet.......
But generally basics are bitter in taste......!
