Wars are justified in the name of a "good cause", religion, democracy, liberation, ideology, greed, basically anything but the true cause.
Wars are caused by political incompetence, the inability of politicians to resolve desputes by negotiation or diplomacy.
Sadly the people who pay the price for this incompetence is never the person who fails, its always the poor sods who are expected to kill their "opponent" on the other side who is there for the same reason, political ineptitude.
The alternative to War is great statesmanship, negotition skills and an International commitment to stop Wars before they start, an International code that if derelicted will bring about a unified and punitive economic and sanctioned response.
The UN had such a mandate but over the years that has been eroded into the toothless sham it is today.

We have many words for the premature ending of life. War is the universal standard way of describing this on an industrial scale. It has even spawned it's own sub-genre of euphemisms for killing - genocide, decimation and collateral damage to name but three.
As for alternatives, when your very existence is threatened by a belligerent power there is little room for manoeuvre. You must fight or die.
The moral right to defend yourself becomes decidedly more murky when applied to pre-emptive actions. Perhaps there are justifiable reasons for prosecuting such a war. However the decision to launch a first strike has to be made with the full knowledge that events will happen that were not predicted, those involved in the events will be changed forever by them and people other than those targeted will be killed. No matter how you dress it up it is state sanctioned murder.
Aggressive war, as exemplified by Nazi Germany, is the nadir of human culture and should be recognised as such.

I'm afraid you aren't looking at the big picture of war. Yes war kills but the difference between war and murder is that murder is only used to benefit one person i.e. trying to get life insurance, revenge...while war on the other hand benefits a country depending on whether or not you win the war. It amuses me how some one can talk about how horrible the war is when they are sitting on their lazy boy watching it on the news, while people are stuck on the front line with bullets flying over their head.

If you wanna get rid of war, get rid of ignorance. But since people like you are abundant I wouldn't count on it any time soon. I guess we could try sitting around a table and smoking a peace pipe, but since that didn't work for the indians...

Some times there is no alternative than to go to war, but I'm sure there are other ways of handling these situations like trade sanctions and seizing a countries wealth and investments and forcing the leaders to tow the line.

Wars cannot be prevented.Wars are due to ideological differences or for plundering wealth or religious. What we may be able to do to avoid killing of innocents in the process. There can be weapons which will destroy wealth of a country and not its population,Destruction installatons, infrastructure will make anyn country poor and unable to fight.Economic war will have far reaching effect than war to kill population.Future wars may be rather economic.

Another word is seeking a political solution to a political problem instead of a military response. Maybe its not as simple as that but holding leaders accountable for placing their own vested interest es or doctrines above the rule of law or general welfare can be a deterrent. Wonder if we will ever see Cheney charged for treason. Would be interesting.

War is another word for legal killing on a large scale.

We are stuck with war as a race, it seems. I do not believe that humans will ever learn to resolve their national differences any other way. It seems there will always be despots and agressors who want to impose their rule over otherwise free people. The only way to deal with these guys is with military intervention.

Well maybe you think it is a better idea if everyone in the world who doesn't believe they way the terrorists do should just lay down and let them kill them. No Way! It's a fight they will get. You can give in if you want to but don't look for alot of people to follow you.
