The "Dogmatic Constitution on Divine Revelation" (Vat. 11, Ch. 3.11) of the Catholic Church says that "all that the inspired, or sacred writers, affirm should be regarded as affirmed by the Holy Spirit, we must acknowledge that the books of Scripture firmly, and without error, teach that truth which God, for the sake of our salvation, wished to be confided to the sacred Scriptures." This is the Church's teaching on the matter after twenty centuries of Christian discernment.

Biblical inerrancy, then, is the Bible's privilege of never teaching error. Does this mean that every statement in the Bible is divine teaching? Of course not. The Bible does not always teach. There are many statements in its various books that are there for historical, geographical, poetic or other reasons. However, whenever a biblical author intends to teach us something, then the Holy Spirit intends that too. Everything that the Bible teaches is without error, but everything in the Bible is not meant as teaching. Each author was left free by the Lord to express himself according to the ideas of his own day. It is the revelation contained in the Scriptures that is important.

There are many accounts in the Bible, which employ a literary device used by Jewish Old and New Testament writers called Midrash. Midrash is the substantive of the Hebrew word darash which means to search, to investigate, to study and, also, to expound on the fruits of the research. The aim of Midrash is to draw from Scripture a lesson for the present.

Midrash could also be defined as a "reflection on Scripture in the light of the actual situation of God's people and of the developments of God's action on its history." It proposes to explain the meaning of Scripture in the light of the later historical experience of God's people. This kind of interpretation often opened the door to embellishments of the sacred accounts, anachronisms, and a freedom in handling and maneuvering the data of tradition that were at times a little too candid and certainly very imaginative.

A good example is the Midrashic story of Noah and the flood. It is the divine message, which is important, (God saves his children from evil) not the literal account of the story.

Grace and peace!

The Biblical description of the flood in Genesis chapter 6, 7 and 8 indicates that the deluge was universal and it destroyed every living thing on earth, except those present with Noah (pbuh) in the ark. The description suggests that the event took place 1656 years after the creation of Adam (pbuh) or 292 years before the birth of Abraham, at a time when Noah (pbuh) was 600 years old. Thus the flood may have occurred in the 21st or 22nd Century B.C.

This story of the flood, as given in the Bible, contradicts scientific evidence from archaelogical sources which indicate that the eleventh dynasty in Egypt and the third dynasty in Babylonia were in existence without any break in civilisation and in a manner totally unaffected by any major calamity which may have occurred in the 21st century B.C. This contradicts the Biblical story that the whole world had been immersed in the flood water.

In contrast to this, the Qur’anic presentation of the story of Noah and the flood does not conflict with scientific evidence or archaeological data; firstly, the Qur’an does not indicate any specific date or year of the occurance of that event, and secondly, according to the Qur’an the flood was not a universal phenomenon which destroyed complete life on earth. In fact the Qur’an specifically mentions that the flood was a localised event only involving the people of Noah.
It is illogical to assume that Prophet Muhummad (pbuh) had borrowed the story of the flood from the Bible and corrected the mistakes before mentioning it in the Qur’an.

Bible has been edited many times already by the church and kings centuries ago to meet thier interests and standards. Whereas The Holy Qur'an is still protected from such corruption because God choose to protect it HIMSELF.
(This is) the revelation of the Book in which there is no doubt – from the Lord of the Worlds.[Al-Qur’an 32:1]

Hebrews 4:12> For the word of God is living and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.
2nd Timothy 3:15-16> All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, 17so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.
These 2 verses of scripture not only state that the story of Noah's Ark is true, but so is the bible, after all God can not lie.
By the way the Bible is a Non-Fiction book

The story is that the world was so corrupt legends say that even animals of different species had sexual intercourse with each other. Giants believed they would survive the Flood because of their height. Iron domes were built to protect against the Flood. Yet, of all these stories, Noah simply built an ark and survived the Flood. No one said that God did not recreate the world of animals and man. In fact, the Bible can be interpreted to say that He did. It is man's own simple nature to listen to what doesn't make sense, because man doesn't make sense and never will. Check out the link:

Jesus used the story as an example, so it must be true,
the alternative is unthinkable.
(MATTHEW 24:36-39) ““Concerning that day and hour nobody knows, neither the angels of the heavens nor the Son, but only the Father. 37 For just as the days of Noah were, so the presence of the Son of man will be. 38 For as they were in those days before the flood, eating and drinking, men marrying and women being given in marriage, until the day that Noah entered into the ark; 39 and they took no note until the flood came and swept them all away, so the presence of the Son of man will be.”

Here's the deal: you either take the Bible - ALL of the Bible - or you leave it. Once you start justifying that creation was a progressive 'millions of years' and not a literal six days then the rest of the Bible follows. If you pick and choose which books of the Bible you follow, then you cannot justify why you believe.

The whole Bible is a story - it is HisStory. :)

Yes that is what it would mean, that is why they don't want you to know its up on mount Ararat, in turkey. But it is true and his Holy spirit is true and you can get it right now so God is real and he will prove it to you just ask in Jesus name to give you his Holy spirit found in john 3, and then go read the bible from john to the end and see the reality of his power and his living alive spirit, that you need.

not necessarily fiction, but a story along the lines of king arthur and excalibur--the man was real, the magick sword not so much--technical term would be "legend"
