Unix is an operating system that was developed in the early 70's. It is writen in the C programming language and it can be extended by knowledgeable programmers. Unix was around before PCs and it ran on Unix servers (such as Apollos or HP servers).
The original Unix systems were strictly command line based systems with no graphical user interface (GUI). Later, a GUI was added for the Unix systems using a macro language called X-Windows and Motif.
In more recent times, Linux was developed to allow PC users to run an operating system that worked like Unix. Linux uses the same commands and has many of the same features of Unix. In addition, programs writen for Unix will run on a PC using the Linux operating system.
The latest versions of the Mac operating systems are based on the Unix operating system, though most Mac users never explore that far into the OS.

Unix is a computere operating system developed by Ken Thompson, Dennis Ritchie and team. It was developed in the 1970's at the AT&T Bell Labs. The C programming language has been made use of to write this operating system.
In the 1990's Linus Trovalds created an open source version of the Unix OS and called it Linux.
Although Linux and Unix are virtually the same, Linux is more popular as compared to Unix because its open source and a lot of flavors of Linux are available.
Unix on the other hand is a proprietory OS.

UNIX is an Operating System now available on the IBM-386. It was developed in the USA, originally by BELL then licensed to AT&T. The Unix system used in this LAB is LINIX, a free UNIX system.
Access is provided to the LINIX host via the CIT wide network, and appropriate software connects the local computer to the provided UNIX hosts. You will need to run TELNET, a software application, to access remote the LINIX hosts via the network.
The features are :
multi-user
more than one user can use the machine at a time
supported via terminals (serial or network connection)
multi-tasking, more than one program can be run at a time
hierarchical directory structure, to support the organisation and maintenance of files
portability
only the kernel ( <10%) written in assembler. This meant the operating system could be easily converted to run on different hardware
tools for program development, a wide range of support tools (debuggers, compilers)
