I wore my disposable contacts for a month straight and now I'm in agony with bloodshot, swollen eyes. They're watery and glassy-looking. It hurts to blink, and I'm very sensitive to light.

I took out my contacts and am wearing glasses. I've been using re-wetting drops constantly. 24-hours later the pain has not let up. What could I have done to my eyes by wearing them for so long? Should I seek medical attention immediately, or give my eyes more time to recover on their own?

Go see an optometrist or ophthalmologist. Your eyes are trying to tell you that they did not like what you were doing. Most contacts are not designed to be worn overnight (extended wear) rather just during the day (daily wear). It has to do with oxygen transfer. Your eyes need oxygen and they get it from the air just like our lungs. Contacts block/slow the transfer, so what can happen is that the blood vessels from your sclera (white part) try to make up the difference and become engorged with oxygen rich blood. Wearing contacts that are not intended for extended wear can also weaken resistance to infection....go get your eyes checked and stop wearing your lenses until you do so.

I'm not sure the re-wetting drops all the time is the best idea because if u've got an active infection in there u could just be feeding it, u should probably get to a doctor asap especially if they're swollen or there's discharge....it could go away on itself but why take chances??? a doctor would likely give u medicine that would speed the recovery process

Sounds to me like you scratched your cornea. I did that inadvertently when I wore my contacts too long. If you go to the doctors, they're give you some medicated drops to prevent infection. If you don't go, it may take you much longer to recover and you could possibly get an infection.

I would recommend that you see an eye doctor tomorrow.

First of all, are the contacts the 30-day kind? Just because they are disposable doen't mean they are.
As a 30-day user, I take mine out every other day to clean. I tend to go 2 or 3 days out of the month without them just to get a break.
If you have not cleaned them in 30 days, get them out! Because they hurt and are bloodshot, that is your body telling you something's wrong.
I'd go to the optometrist to make sure you haven't done any damage to your corneas.

It's likely you have some sort of infection.

I would seek medical attention immediately - better safe than sorry.

Rule of thumb: If you're in agonizing pain, GO TO A DOCTOR IMMEDIATELY!

Hope you feel better soon.
