There is a Windows 2003 Server edition, it somes with all the windows networking services. I actually use it as my (Windows) desktop, as it's more stable and superior to XP.

Really, but you want to decide, is what type of Server. What will the server do? HTTP? FTP? What will it host? A computer itself isnt a Server or Client... it's the softwarev that is running.

The cheapest easiest way will porbably be linux... as you can install a Linux Distro that comes with all the Server apps setup. Right now I have Slackware Linux installed on an older computer as my Server... I use it mostly for testing web applications.

For starters, I recommend SLAX Server edition. It's a Linux Live-CD, boots right off the CD, but it somes of all sorts of Server apps already setup. This way you can test a Slackware server wihtout havign to install anything yet:

Good place to start to find the Linux Distro for you:

If one of the PC's is a P3 with 500meg of memory and a HDD of 8 gig or better it will make a nice server. Add a NIC card if there is not one. then just load the software. The book says 256K of memory but it will be slow.
A server is just a PC with a little more room in it and higher specs then a workstation.
