If your dog has a chip in him, A dog pound will scan, A vet will Scan providing it is a stay dog or if someone walks in and said they found a dog. Vets won't ask people who are their regular customer, but if they are aware of your dog missing they will scan a dog if someone happen to come in they did not know. I own a scanner, my Friends own one. When a stray comes around and if the dog lets me I will scan them. AKC also have a pet recovery program that is great too. Not only are my dogs chip I also have them in the recovery program. They are also DNA...You need to put up signs, tell your local police, vet, shelters and go around making your neighbors be aware that your dog is missing.

Call your vet again and ask if he/she even has a scanner? The sad thing is that people are being told to chip their pets but some shelters and vets still do not have scanners -- and some only have scanners that can read certain brands of chips.

But yes, pester your vet. I can't believe they are being so cold to you! Call the other vets in your town, too, and describe your dog. Also call all the shelters and the dog warden. Bother them daily, too. I mean, seriously, don't feel bad about being a pain in the butt.

In addition, take out newspaper ads as someone suggested and also make flyers to hang up around your neighborhood. Put "REWARD" on them -- you don't have to specify how much. Also put in your ad and on your flyers that the dog "needs daily medication." People are more likely to give the dog back if they think it's sick. A picture on the flyers is also helpful for identification purposes.

Go door-to-door in your neighborhood and make sure everyone knows the dog is lost and ask if they'll keep an eye out for her.

Also, if your dog is a pure breed, see if there are any breed rescues in your state and call them to a) alert them that you've lost your dog -- maybe they will get her in as a rescue; and b) they may have additional advice for you.

I truly, truly hope you get your doggie back. I will think good thoughts for you and for her, too. My very best luck to you. Please post back in your question with "additional information" if you get her back -- I'd like to know!

The main reason they put the chip in the pet is so that if it ends up at the animal shelter, they can identify it. Just run lost pet ads in the local paper, they're usually free. And if you have a photo, you could put a few flyers out in the neighborhood. We lost a kitty and I know what you feel like. I really hope he comes home soon.

Dreamz is mistaken all vets do not do this because my dog was stolen and she had a chip and If all vets were required to do this i am sure my dog would have been returned to me .I asked a vet one time why dont they do that and he told me that it is not required by law . Well I think it should be . good luck and I hope you get your dog back .

keep checking local shelters and maybe put up flyers. Also you can call the chip maker and find out if anyone has found your dog.

Put out flyer's with a photo of the dog, dogs name, number to contact if found, and mention a small reward. If your dog needs medication make mention of it. Even if she doesn't make mention of it. Sometimes if someone is thinking of keeping her and they see that the dog needs medical attention they usually return them, but not always. Check with your local police department to see if anyone reported finding a dog that might be yours, take a copy of a photo in and report her lost. They have a lost and found log for animals. And check with dog control to see they pick your dog up and took her there. You can put a poster of your dog up there too. Also ask them for their on-line website to check every day on it for her. Check with your dog shelter(s) too. If they have a website as well to use. Check with dog rescue organisations. Sometimes they get them for the dog pound/dog control to adopt out to others. Send them photos of your dog and have them watch for her. Also ask them if they know of anyone whose has a dog (bloodhound) that is used for tracking/searching for other dogs. Be sure you have something with your dogs scent on it in case they do. Call you radio stations and local television station see if they make mention of it for you. Check parks and dog parks in case someone may have taken her with them. Sometimes homeless people take our fury friends for company. Never approach them alone if they do have your dog contact the police and have your lost dog poster and photo to prove she's yours. Of course the vet or dog control officer have the scanners to check and verify. Post in the newspaper and look in lost and found sections. Keep in mind that soem people will send you on wild goose chases to look for her to be cruel. If you call some and don't "correctly identify her in description" they sometimes won't let you come take a look to see if it is her. Not because they don't believe you but more so because don't know your dog like you do and see somewhat of a different description. If this happens ask dog control to get the dog so that you can view the dog at their shelter. Make sure you post at 25 mile circumference.
