Freeze them.
Most fresh veggies need blanched before you freeze them, but firm fresh onions are an exception. They can be chopped or sliced, and frozen without blanching.
I would suggest freezing them in small potions, just a few tablespoons. You can use an ice tray to do this, that press in seal wrap, or you can always make small piles on a plate and freeze them then throw them in a freezer bag or other container.
If you make piles of a tablespoon or two, freeze them for a few hours then spritz them with water and give them another hour or so for the water to freeze over the piles. This will help seal them up in indivial servings and keep them from sticking together.
You can just chop them up and threw them in a gallon bag and flatten it out as much as possible so it will be easier to break chunks off. I speak from experience her, it's pain to try and break off chunks if you freeze it to thick.
They will keep for atleast 3 months like this maybe longer.
You may also want to make some onion broth and freeze it. If you make a lot of soups you can use the broth in them, this can also be used as the liquid in place of water in cassoroles or when rehydrating potatoes or cooking rice if the dish would be enhanced with the flavor of onion.
Enjoy!

do you have a food dehydrator? dry them, do not frezze them!! onion is mostly water and will end up with mush. keep them in a cool dark place . we go thru 2 or 3 lbs a week. Do you mean 6 onion or 6 lbs? cook something, I use that many in a pot of soup, it is a vegtable not an herb. put them in / on a plastic shelf thing in closet. do not put in paper or plastic will encourage spoiling

chop them up and put them in a zip lock freezer bag, then put them in your freezer. they will keep for several months, ready to use for cooking when you need them.
