AUM is the supreme mantra in this entire cosmos. In fact the creation originated from AUM. In Upanishads and Vedas, the greatness of AUM has been discussed in detail. A is equated to the waking stage, U to the dreaming stage and M to the deep sleep stage. The chanting of Omkara, i.e., AUM creates a sonorous ringing sound. The Omkara is chanted in the early morning 21 times daily in Prasanthi Nilayam as guided by Shri Sathya Sai baba. You may feel the vibe when you go there. AUM can be chanted without any suffix. For more details you may go through spiritual literature available in any web sites. nagarajan.

It is divine like a child saying "Ma" , the starting of the power of words in a human being , till death , when also the lucky ones are able to utter "Maa", to begin the sound of silence.
Aum in itself a complete Mantra or Prayer , which does not need any prefix or suffix.
By chanting Aum only a person can be liberated.
Aum is the most divine word which helps in to augment the correct resonance to purify oneself.
The word Amen in west is a replica of the same.

This has 3 parts 'aa', u', m, but pronounced as one single syllable.
When pronouncing 'aoum', the jeevathma invokes the paramathma to be in one united form. The inseparable nature of paramatma with jeevathma is established by the letter u.

It is considered Devinne because all other phonetical forms and mantras germinated from this syllable. The intensity with which this mantra is pronounced, the ultra sound energy circle woven is the space / prana, attaches the five elements together and prepares an atmosphere for the human mind to merge with the omnipresent.

Normally it is a suffix to every mantra.

Aum is the most mysterious word in the Universe.: AUM is thought to be the Eternal Sound. IT IS THE SOUND of GOD THAT GIVES CONSCIOUSNESS TO THE MOTHER NATURE TO START ACTING.

Aum has three sounds A...U....M. " A " signifies the beginning of the universe. U signifies the life period of universe and M signifies the destruction of the Universe. Hence Aum is the only word which notifies the three main work of God that is creation, operation and destruction of srishti (Universe).

This represents the three first forms of God viz. are Brahmaa (creator), Vishnu (operator) and the destructor (The Shiva).

Most of the mantra in Hinduism start with the word AUM, because AUM is the consciousness and the other words in a mantra are Nature or Prakriti. AUM in itself is a complete Mantra and its chanting is sacred and brings enlightenment. It is truely called MAHA MANTRA.

It does not belong to any language...it is primodal vibration of the consciousness which created the universe

AUM has four steps A...U....M and the last one silent

A = Physical plane , wake-state of mind, Beginning,Brahmaa, Raj

U = Astral Plane, dream state of mind, Manifestation,Vishnu,Sat

M = Causal Plane, dream-less state , Destruction,Rudra,Tam

Fourth unspoken sound = Turiya, beyond universe, Enlightened state

WHAT DOES ' AUM or OM ' MEAN ?

Aum or Om is an ancient mantra, a primordial vibration. It is so old that its very nature is innately sacred. We follow the tradition of beginning our classes chanting Aum and the invocation to create a sense of harmony and unity among the students in a powerful way.

Aum chanting is according to the knowledge of swar & vyanjan which can not be described here being lengthy. If yet it is required please put this question again on internet. Om is the best name of Godin the Vedas. I shall try to send its brief description on receipt of your question again. The chanting of Om start care of the aspirant, controls from bad evils, provide to contain good respiratory system to give long life, save from heart disease, high blood pressure and so many other sickness. I may mention here that by virtue of my long, hard Ashtang Yoga practice, The Om holy word has blessed me to be separated from so many tensions,sickness, etc., and at the age of about 65 years, I feel myself a young and this holy word I have been feeling everytime in my respiratory system .Research can not be done on any spiritualism or holy word Om etc. Only the preach is to be taken in action in life & secondly hard yoga practice is required then every experience is originated in the heart. Because research is a subject of mind,but Mantras are though studied with mind but its practice makes dead mind and thinking, then only experiences are experienced.

WHAT IS THE CORRECT WAY TO CHANT 'AUM' ?

The correct pronunciation of AM requires vast study of Sanskrit Grammar which is taught in presence of spiritual master and disciple face to face. You are not before me therefore I can not teach such a lenghty subject on e-mail. Yet you can ask everytime any question. However I give you some education regarding pronunciation of OM. In grammar there are about 2000 formulae of Sanskrit Grammar,from which one is "ACHONTYADITI" please follow its meaning--- In Sanskitalphabet viz., Aa, Ee, Uu etc., (these are called ACH) and Ka, Kha, Ga ( these are called HAL). So according to the above Sutra(formula) if there is a last ACH in the words and the ACH is also before the any HAL, then the HAL with that ACH will be named as TI. Next formula is "OMABHYADANE", please try to follow its meaning. When Om is used in Yajna then OM's word will be PLUT UDAAT,then the pronunciation of OM will be UDAAT PLUT and it will be pronounced lengthy voice means OM word will take tripple time of one time palpitation like O O O M. Because OM word has got TI name. That is why I am telling that it is not possible to teach on e-mail. This is the correct way to chant AUM. However it requires more clarification with regards to breathing concern which you can ask again if needed.

Chanting of Aom in different ways is simply this that when we chant in Yajna (Agnihotra etc.) i.e., inburning fire when we pour Ghee and samagri therein, then AUM is used as TI. Otherwise it is chanted simply AUM without considering three times palpitation time.

Actually in Pranayaam there is no need of chanting AUM but in Jaap the AUM is chanted in mind only with breathing system. However if it is chanted in mind while doing Pranayaam then there is no harm

OM in itself is not the total truth; But it is very close to the truth.

From the silent non-identification, unlimited state emerges the beginning of the primordial OM only to merge on to the same.

Lingering on in the utterance of OM, you revel and revolve around the divine silence. This is what makes it sacred.
