A house wine can refer to several things. 1) it is the wine that the restaurant serves at a reduced price to a customer, and the owner of the restaurant/franchise usually has a deal worked out with a distributor to purchase a certain amount for a discount. It is typically kept on the floor for servers to pour right away. 2) like at the Olive Garden, they have a vineyard that creates a house wine in a red, rose and white just for them. It cannot be purchased anywhere other than Olive Garden and is considered their house wine. Since it is a product of their franchise, it is sold at a much lower price. Most restaurants will always have at least one red and one white house wine and depending on the type of food they serve, that will define the varietal they decide to use. Most house wines are not too strong, and don't often change varietal. It can be used for cooking, as it would be most cost effective for the restaurant, since it is typically the most inexpensive wine.

i would agree with renate and justme. Although a lot of times here in Napa and Sonoma Valley, the house wines can be quite good. A local restaurant in Sonoma has a divine italian red that is their house wine. I usually order that when I am there. It is usually always good.

However, I do also keep my own "house wines" at home. These are wines which are fairly consistent year to year, i can drink them with a wide variety of food and buy them by the case (12-bottle box). My house red is usually silverado or luna sangiovese and my house white is usually silverado sauv blanc or luna pinot grigio or luna freakout (white blend) These 5 wines go with nearly any cuisine that I cook year round. I tend to cook a lot of italian food and these are mostly italian varietals that pair well with that type of food. I cook with them, drink them, give them as gifts etc. All are in the mid teens price point. $15 - $18 per bottle.

In restaurants the proprietors will buy a certain type of wine in bulk and get a special deal from the producer of the wine; for "house wine". Usually, it is the least expensive wine on the menu. You generally buy it by the glass or carafe when you are dining. Usually a restaurant will have white or red house wine. All restaurants use different wine companies for house wines so "house wine" is not consistent.

House wine is usually the cheapest bottle of wine to be served in a restaurant. Usually you get an Italian wine in an Italian restaurant, Spanish in a Spanish restaurant and so on although this does not have to be the case.

House wines are wines served at restaurants from a stock that the owner has purchased in bulk quantities. This way he can usually get a moderately good wine at a discount price. They are usually served in a decanter, or already poured in a glass, as opposed to a selected branded bottle being placed at the table. It's handy for people who don't know enough about wines to be able to make an informed choice.

House wine just refers to the brand the restaurant is trying to sell the most of, they usually get a deal on a certain brand/vintage, and they usually offer a deal on that brand. It can be any type of wine, but usually it is a moderatly priced wine, often good, just usually nothing spectacular.

House wine is a mix of the left over wines, a variety of different wines making the house wine.. like Chardonnay, Merlot, etc. It is usually very cheap and of cheap quality.

Cooking wine is also of cheap quality, actually cooking wine is the cheapest quality wine. It should not even be considered to drink because sometimes salt and other flavors are added.
