Hyundai amica?

Question

For a Hyundai amica.
The dashboard indiactes ' Check Engine' sign.
The mechanic doesnt know why.
Last time it showed 'Check engine' I changed the ignition coil and the sign went off - this was 6 months ago.
Any suggestions pls

since the asker is driving an amica, he/she can't get to an autozone (because amicas are sold in the UK, not the US). I would suggest going to a second garage, one with a scan tool (code reader), to get the check engine code. There are many reasons a check engine sign goes on. The simplest reason is if the the petrol cap is not tightened until you hear at least one click. If this is the case, loosen and tighten it, and wait a few days for it to go off. If you don't care too much about it, you can disconnect the battery and reconnect it 3-5 minutes later. You'll have to enter a security code if your stereo requires one. Then the check engine will be gone, but will come back on later if the problem still exists. Some check engine lights are temporary.

if the car is a 96 or newer an autoparts store can check the computer to find the code for the light being on (autozone)and its free

could be the oxygen sensor...get it coded....obviously your mechanic doesn't know what he is doing or intentionaly ripping you off. You didn't say what year it is and it may still be under warranty. Call dealership and find out.
