There are different categories for obtaining an American visa. There is the non-immigration and the immigration. For non-immigration too there is B-1, B-2 which are also called the tourist visas.

Once you procure an application form from the U.S. Consulate office, you have to also get an interview day and time. Then pay the application fee and the visa fee which will be notified to you when you procure your form.

After you pay the fees via demand draft, on the day of your interview, you will be asked questions by the Consul officer as to why you would like to visit the U.S. You sometimes have to show proof that you will not stay on in the U.S. eg. bank documents, letter from your employers etc.

They grant the visa if they find all documents in place on the same day. The visa is stamped on the passport. They either give a 6 months visa or even some may get a 10 year visa.
