Pride.

Pride is excessive belief in one's own abilities, that interferes with the individual's recognition of the grace of God. It has been called the sin from which all others arise. Pride is also known as Vanity.

Envy is the desire for others' traits, status, abilities, or situation.

Gluttony is an inordinate desire to consume more than that which one requires.

Lust is an inordinate craving for the pleasures of the body.

Anger is manifested in the individual who spurns love and opts instead for fury. It is also known as Wrath.

Greed is the desire for material wealth or gain, ignoring the realm of the spiritual. It is also called Avarice or Covetousness.

Sloth is the avoidance of physical or spiritual work.

The seven deadly sins in the Christian tradition were first compiled by Pope Gregory I around the year 600. They are pride, covetousness, lust, anger, gluttony, envy, and sloth. Gregory also compiled a list of the seven virtues: faith, hope, charity, justice, prudence, temperance, and fortitude.

Can I say it's a seven way tie?
pride - wanting to have the best of everything, breast enhancements and plastic surgery
envy - wanting what everyone else has, keeping up with the Joneses, young girls killing themselves trying to look like a model
wrath - violence in the media, the reality of war and hatred, an eye-for-an-eye mentality
avarice - there are more self-storage places than McDonald's in our country. Why do we NEED all of this stuff???
sloth - lazy students, unwillingness to act in the defense of others, apathy in our communities "let someone else take care of it"
gluttony - we eat and waste more food than anyone else in the world
lust - on t.v. and the movies... Our kids are having sex younger and younger, warped sense of morality

I think if we all tried to fix at least one of these things in our lives, the rest would soon follow. We don't because the seven deadly sins give us earthly pleasure, shallow and temporary.

Yes, greed is definitely out there in numbers, but I would say tht it's all out there, not that I believe that one sin is more deadly than another. They are all evidences of the sin nature in us all, and a reminder of why we need Jesus.

Pride, because its the one that's at the heart of all of the others, letting us be satisfied with our failings, so satisfied that we don't feel the need to change.
