I suffer panic attack so I can relate to how your gf must be feeling, & its great she has you being supportive & someone she can talk about her problems to.
When I firt started having panic attacks I had no clue what was happening to me I thought I was going crazy.
It came to a point I had many blackouts and couldnt even leave my house. If I did my heart would start to race so fast & start sweating, tremblin & could not speak nor concentrate etc (all the symptoms).
It's somthing you have no control over, I read so much advice about the breathing excericse to do, its not useful what so ever!! does not help, well not for me anyways & really dont think it wold help anyone with this disorder. Imagine trying doing it infornt of someone you dont know while having a panic atack they would think your totally insane haha.
Anyways It came to much for me to cope with and it was scary not knowing what was wrong with me so in the end I went to the hospital who diagnosed me with panic disorder.
In away it was kind of a relief knowing what I had wrong with me and knowing it is supposed to be curable over time.
The doctor put me on anti depressents & Trancs
which had MANY side effects but after months of trying different medications finally found one that worked great with me. If I stop taking my medication the PANIC all comes back, or if Im even a few hours late of taking my medication itys really not nice but id rather that than have panic attacks.
Well I hope sharing my information with you helps.

hi, your friend is fortunate, for the friend she has in you. people generally run from us. as for knowing more about panic attacks, just put that in your search engine and you will get plenty of reading. she blacks out because she is hyperventilating when she's having an attacks. i used to blackout also, until i learned how to breath properly. if she is on an anti-depressants for depression, that's a good thing, but it won't help subdue the panic attacks. other meds are required for them. then if she goes to therapy, she can discover the cause of the attacks, unless she already knows, such as a traumatic event, abuse..etc. then can learn how to control some of the attacks with the hep of this meds. I hope this helped! good luck to you both! :)

Just being with her and reassuring her she is alright. maybe have your friend visit the Doctor for this problem. I have had panic attacks most of my life and there is help with medication and therapy. Also try to help with deep breathing exercises where she would want to breath slowly in through her nose, hold it for 10 seconds, then exhale out through her mouth and keep repeating until she feels better.

Direct her to http://deeplyrelax.com She should learn to practice the breathing method so she is ready, if there is another attack. Nettle tea, or Valerian root helps some who prefer natural products. See http://www.anxietypanic.com/signs.html & http://www.nimh.nih.gov/healthinformation/index.cfm (healthinformation/index.cfm) "panic attacks", under "P".

Panic attacks as I was told were caused due to anxiety within oneself and not coping with the ordeal given.. everything was overwhelming and too much to bear.. so to speak.. hence the brain ticked fast but the heart ticked faster.. so much so that one felt almost "spaced out", lacking oxygen, and of wanting to run in "fear".. but caused due to one's own brain.. almost playing with ones' sense of being.... I wouldn't suggest taking chemicals, as that would only trigger more encumberances, especially when one has to be weaned off the medication, but, a good counsellor, one with whom one can "trust" or better still, taking stock of ones emotions, accepting the dilemma and dealing with it, that to me would be far more imperative as it teaches one to "journey" and "grow" ....
