Say I wanted dark brown hair.
I have mediam.
I use 20 on one side 40 on the other.
What would be the difference?

on the side u use 20 will give you dark brown hair
but on other side where u use 40 will give lighter shade'
40 is used only for highlighting

a 20 hair developer would not do as much damage to the hair and will have and the same result as a 40 volume but it will leave your hair with more damage makes no time diffrence because it depends in how fast your hair takes color
use a 10 volume if you want it to last 6-8 shampoos

i recommend to use the 20 volume developer

0 if you are changing tone or going darker
10 volume for slightly lightening the color
20 volume for 2 colors lighter
30 volume for 3 colors lighter
40 volume for 4 colors lighter
You would never use a 40 volume for dark brown hair. It is not necessary to use such a strong developer.
