I don't think so. I think the best way to look at is to see that they might simply not have anything to say. Just because they aren't' speaking does not mean they aren't learning how to communicate, even verbally.

Because there are two and they are twins it is unlikely that they both have any sort of developmental disorder, or any other disorder that would impede their language development.

Do talk with your paediatrician about this and ask him to recommend an expert in child development. Talk with that expert. No advice or information you can get online can ever compare to the actual help you can get in person. A professional can put your mind at ease and/or help where it is needed.

I had twins and my daughter had twins, and my mom's sister had twins....they have their own language and don't want to share with us until they are 3 or 4....My twins had a very large vocabulary but it was foreign to me . The one word they called each other was Deetz.
Their names were Daniel and David.
And all I ever got out of them was whining.
Also mine got into a truck at 18 months old and wrecked it. That was the first audible words when the little one came running to get me..he said..me brudder..me brudder..and pointed in the ditch..lol

Tonight the same brother wrecked his truck in a head on collision..and the little one directed traffic and help load the truck on the wrecker...By the way...they life flighted him, David to the hospital. Nothing broken, just bruised and split open his knees and he has been banged up by the air bag..But he will live.

I can still see Daniel running for me brudder...and tonight the bond is still there..he was the first one David called.

Speech development delays is known to take longer in twins. This isnt because the twins have a disability, it is simply because most twins are born either premature or at a low birth rate. Also their parents may have less time to attend to them indiviually to help them develope their verbal skills.

A child is considered to be a late talker is he/she has spoken less then 50 words by the age of two. If your child can speak 50 words at two dont worry is all those words are not pronounced perfectly, two year olds are supposed to talk baby talk. If twins ar late in developing these 50 words, it is important not to assume that they will catch up in time. You may consider taking them for a "baseline" test with a speech pathologist who will moniter their progress in intervals and also provide help and guidance. If they find it necassary they may recommend thearpy.

My twins didn't say anything remotely recognisable until they were 22 months old. I took them to the doctor when they still didn't say anything at 18 months but he said anything up to 2 years for a first word is considered normal, he did send them for a hearing check though.

As long as they seem to understand what you're saying and are babbling I don't think you have anything to worry about.

i would wait a little while longer before worrying. 2 of mine didnt wanna talk right away either. id say if they dont say anything by 24mths then have em checked out. you might want to check under their tongues if the skin underneath the tongue is connected too far forward it will inhibit speech. my second son was like that its called being tongue tied. you want the skin that connects the underside of the tongue to the bottom of mouth to be towards the back not connected to the bottom front of the tongue. if they do have it connected too far forward on the bottom of the tongue then u need to see doctor to have it snipped. very simple surgury. nothing to worry about. if this isnt the problem then check with doctor as to what else could be wrong. hope this helps and good luck.

No, don't worry yet. Your twins have a way of communicating with each other. Boys talk later than girls.

Don't worry about the children not talking. Some kids start slower than others.
My son started his gigi and gaga only when he was 14 months. I asked some therapists and they suggested that whenever I am with my son, i can just point to some items in the house and talk to them. For example: You are carrying one of them and you point at a moving fan. You can start telling him something like, this is a fan. see the fan is turning. then watch him and see if his mouth is moving to imitate what you have said. If you see it, repeat yourself...

Good luck,.

my son is currently 3 & going through speech therapy... I also have an 18 month old daughter who is a talker. I would say that if they can't say ,"car,Go,baba, moma, dada, etc.. then just keep an eye out. early intervention is the key! Their doctor relies on YOU to keep him informed on thier progress, be honest with him & just an FYI.. I get all my services for my son for free. Their are programs from the cigarette taxes that pay for this stuff. If you're concerned ,take it to their pede, If he's not, look online & research , then take it back to him & tell him you want these services.. ONLY YOU KNOW YOUR KIDS! God bless.

As long as they're babbling they should be fine. My neighbor's son is 18 months old and all he says is mama, dada, baba, and he just learned how to say bye bye. His doctor gave him a clean bill of health and said he's absolutely fine so your boys probably are too. But if you're still worried about it, you could ask their pediatrician.
