I have a Canon HV10 camcorder, and an HP Pavillion Entertainment Notebook that are both equipped with 4-pin firewire outlets. When I first plugged the camcorder in, I heard the hard drive start to think and then saw a little balloon on the bottom right hand corner of my screen that showed it recognized my camcorder, but then nothing after that! And now I don't even get a balloon. The LCD screen on my camcorder shows I'm connected. I've tried several video editing programs, and nothing works. I've read my manual and know the settings are right... I've been having computer problems, so could it be a virus? Please help!

You should should see your 1394 card listed in Device Manager and the camera should be a level down under Imaging Devices. The camcorder should be switched to play, not record.

I've just realised the HV10's a high def recorder! I know people have had problems capturing with some apps - have you tried HDVSplit?

Do you need to install some software? I did when I purchased a Canon camcorder? If you have done that and your camcorder is set on 'play', try going to Control Panel>System>Hardware>Device Manager and see if your camera is shown. If it isn't, go back to system>printers and other hardware. In the pane on the left you will see 'add hardware'. Click that and click 'search' That should show whether or not your computer is 'seeing' the camcorder
