You (possibly) have Gout.
Approximately one million people in the United States suffer from attacks of gout. Gout is nine times more common in men than in women. It predominantly attacks males after puberty.

The small joint at the base of the big toe is the most common site of an acute gout attack. Other joints that can be affected include the ankles, knees, wrists, fingers, and elbows. Acute gout attacks are characterized by a rapid onset of pain in the affected joint followed by warmth, swelling, reddish discoloration, and marked tenderness.

If this is what you have, your doctor can prescribe medications that will give you relief from the pain.

Soaking your toe in Epsom salts and warm water can help draw out the infection.

You may have gout or you may have an ingrown toenail. If it is an ingrown toenail, your Primary Care Physician can split the nail if necessary.

Based on my painful history of ingrown toenail, I recommend talking to your doctor sooner, rather than waiting for an infection to occur.
