I had a 1 1/2 yr old kitty named Sophie who died as a result of eating the food that has been recalled. I thought those of us who have lost our pets could share our stories of our pets who sadly went before their time.
It makes me so angry to know that my kitty didn't have to die, that her death was not by God's hand, but someones negligence to ensure that the food they were manufacturing was safe. Theres no reason why I shouldn't have had Sophie with me for the next ten years to love and enjoy her, and what is most upsetting is seeing my two young daughters having to deal with her death. She was an exceptionally sweet cat, who proved to be a dear member of the family and a friend. My 9yr old and 4yr old spent many afternoons playing with her, and they truly loved their cat. Every morning I would find Sophie curled up at the foot of their bed as if she was watching over them during the night. We miss her so much.

I have a 2 yr old cat who till now I was not sure why he was so sick. He started throwing up a lot and became very lazzy. We started to notice after a week that he had stopped eating and he looked thin. We ended taking him to the Animal hospital where he was hospitalized for 4 days and put on fluids. The vet did every test possible and all they could say is that he had liver failure and his kidneys had a high levesl of something that is usually found in very old cats. We ended up spending over $1000 in test and hospital stay. We couldn't afford it anymore and brought him home. Thank God, with all the prayers and love and care we gave him he is ok now. We where very upset the Vet couldn't figure out what made him so sick. I even though he might of drank the water from the toilet or a sick rotten since his intestine where inflamated. Now we have a better idea of what was wrong with him. We only feed him Science Diet but at times we let him out and we think he might of eaten some other cat or dogs food since all his symptoms where the warning signs given out. It is unfortunate that cat/dog food does not have the same standars that our food has.

I know loosing a pet is one of the hardest things to do. Even my husband who is NOT an animal lover cried when we though Tiger was going to die.

Oh, that's so sad! I have a cat named Sophie too. I'm currently sporting Poppy as my avatar though.

I was quite worried when I saw news about the recall and saw how many brands were affected. I checked the can immediately to see if it was made by that company, but it was not. I verified that this morning as well on the website.

I can only give a huge THANK YOU to the Answers Cat community for pointing me in the right direction when I started researching Poppy's weight issue.

The answer for her turned out to be canned food - but luckily I was pointed in the direction of some very very good brands - NONE of which turned up on that list.

And I'm especially relieved about that, because I've recommended switching to canned food to many people - but I've only recommended those good brands, and I'll continue to do so.

What a tragedy!

My thoughts are with those of you who've lost pets or are caring for very sick ones.

We hopefully dodged this problem. It is possible that my dog consumed some of the affected food last week but it's hard to know since the can was thrown away before the recall. So far he seems to be acting normally, so I think he's all right. We also had one can of Iams food that we had to throw away -- luckily that had not yet been opened.

Again, I'm so sorry that people had to watch their animals die or get sick because of this.

I also lost my cat Bitsy to this food poisoning before the recall was ever announced..... I was feeding the Iams and the Science diet brands. At the time my vet and I couldn't understand why she suddenly developed massive kidney failure.Despite all of the tests and IV support we gave her she had to be euthanized after 4 days...That was on 12/31.
(These foods on the recall were manufactured between 12/3/06 and 3/6/07) The FDA is asking those with sick or dead pets to call your state FDA complaint coordinators. A list by state can be found at: www.fda.gov/opacom/backgrounders/complain.
Now that this has come out I am mad as hell! My heart still aches with missing my furbaby.....

Oh my gosh, I'm so sorry about your cat. I was worried about my dog because I thought we had some of the recalled food. It was the same brand, but not the same can size. I just don't think it is okay for the company to get away with this without some kind of punishment. Just because animals were lost does not mean that it was not important. I hope you and your children will find another good kitty soon: )

I am so sorry about Sophie! My cat, Olivia Boots, has spent 5 days in the kitty hospital. I caught it early, so she will live....but I may have to give her fluids through a needle under her skin every other day. She is on an antibiotic now for 14 days and is at home with me. We will repeat the bloodwork in 2 weeks and see if her kidneys are functioning normally. I hope she is okay at that time. I am a flight attendant and am having to take personal leave to be with her. If she isn't back to normal in 2 weeks, I will have to give her away because I won't be able to give her the care she'll need, since I am not home every day. That will break my heart! I, like you, am so angry that my cat's comfortable life has been disrupted by this. I plan on taking legal action. I have already spent over $1500 dollars on her hospital stay. I Think they should at least cover my medical bills since they did this to my cat.

Your story saddens me but at the same time makes me angry with the pet food manufacturer Menufoods. The death of a beloved pet impacts not only the primary care giver, but that pet's entire family - and as you say, the children.

It sickens me that the negligence of these pet food manufacturers took the lives of our beloved 4 legged kids. The contamination was known as far back as January and nothing was done, I'm sure its because it was in the interest of money. I too lost a pet a couple of weeks ago unfortunately I had her cremated before suspecting it had anything to do with what I had fed her. Now my 2 other dogs came back with unfavorable blood test results. Urinalysis will be done this week followed by ultrasound of their kidneys and liver. Anyone who has had a pet die or sick from this please join a class action law suit to hold these manufacturers liable. Please save all your evidence and vet bills, don't let our beloved pets die in vain. There is strength in numbers.

I'm sorry to hear that. I have a 4 yr old cat who we named Sophie. We adopted her last summer. She too loves to lay on the bottom of our bed. I think she was fed one pouch that was on the list, but thankfully nothing happened to her. She drank the gravy and didn't eat much of the meat, so I never bought it again.
