Butterfly....my grandmother made it too....sometimes she used orange juice or lemon juice or extracts to change it up some.
You are right it was clear....she also added nutmeg to the vanilla sauce. I can taste it now....yum yum...
Here is a Lemon sauce.....you can change the flavorings to suit your taste.
1/2 cup sugar
1 tablespoon cornstarch
1 cup boiling water
2 tablespoons butter
3 tablespoons freshly squeezed lemon juice
grated lemon rind of 1 lemon
yellow zest only
pinch of salt
Mix the sugar and cornstarch together in a small, heavy bottomed saucepan. Add the boiling water, stirring constantly. Boil, stirring often, until the mixture is thick and translucent. Remove from the heat and swirl in the butter, lemon juice and rind and salt. Stir to blend, taste, and add a little more lemon juice if you want it more tart. Serve warm.
good luck....Mama Jazzy Geri

Beat 2 eggs lightly, gradually add 1 cup sugar and then continue beating until very frothy and the sugar is dissolved about 15 to 20 minutes. Beat in 2 sticks butter (at room temperature). Finally, beat in a stiff shot of good bourbon whiskey or vanilla. Cook in saucepan over low heat until all ingredients are dissolved.

you should melt equal parts water and sugar and half a teaspoon of corn startch for thickness, then add vanilla or any other extract like lemon or whiskey for flavor if you like. and that should be the clear one your talking about.
