In Indian culture, is it ok for the son to be better than the father? Will the father block the son from becoming better than him? Will the father constantly keep asking for respect and subservience? Will the father try to diminish his son's future if it does not fit in with his wants and needs? Why would some fathers (or mothers) try to hurt their children's present and futures?

I know that most parents are good or at least appear to be good - I am asking under what circumstances would they be not so good - there's no major war or calamity or economic collapose or disease etc going on currently. So, no special reason for being a bad father.

This Kumar sounds like a beemar guy.
Yes, definitely the father can be a rogue. He have heap the injustices from his own parents or in-laws onto his own children. He can heap the stress of his workplace onto his kids. He can pile on the grievances of the outside society onto his family. The mother can be selfish or self centered or lazy or a show-off or fun-loving, etc. Very few angels tread the earth according to me.

You have answered your question yourself. No parent would prevent his/her children from surpassing him/her in every aspect of life. In very extraordinary circumstances some fathers/mothers might try to thwart their step children in order to give special facilities to their own children. Demanding respect and subserving are two different things, not to be confused with each other.
