I bought a used 30-30 which came with a simmons scope.
From what I have been told the .30-30 is not a very accurate rifle and you are just as good to use your iron sights out to 100 yards or so. Most lever actions are not as accurate as bolt actions, and I am sure your .30-30 is a lever action.

A 3-9 is like putting a supercharger on a Yugo. I'd recommend a good peep sight and forget the glass altogether, but if you must, a fixed 2 1/2 or 4x at most will do. I really think the scope's a mistake, though. The whole idea of the 30-30 is to have a light rifle that handles well, and a peep will give you the optical performance of a scope, though without magnification, of course, and it won't ruin the balance and handling characteristics of your gun. Invest in some binoculars, instead, and you'll have a much better combination.

Personally, I have a Weaver 2.5 fixed power scope on mine. The scope has a small objective on it (20 mm) compared to other scopes. In theory, it wouldn't be very good in low light situations, but I've never had a problem.
The scope is light and cheaper than a Leupold (roughly around $150 give or take). While a Leupold or a Nikon 3-9x variable is my scope of choice, I opted for a small fixed power on my 30-30 for two reasons:
1. The low magnification made it easier to acquire targets in brushy areas I like to carry my short, light 30-30 rifle in
2. The accuracy of any 30-30 lever action is on the poor side and doesn't warrant the use of expensive optics.
Good Luck and happy shooting!

First off don't but any budget priced scope, spend the extra cash and get yourself a good high quality scope. Find something around a 1.5X5 x40 or a 2X7x40. When in the field keep it on the lowest magnification, that will help you find your game more quickly and you can then zoom-in if down range.
Many hunters that get a scope and crank it up too 9 power and then can't find there game and when they do, it's to late. Those are the ones who don't know how to use a scope and give them a bad name.

Dont get anything too powerful. The scope that the first answer stated would be plenty (3-9x40). Leupold makes some of the best scopes on the market, but unless you need a sniper's accuracy, other scopes will be fine (such as busnhell, tasco, etc.). Do not get anything like a Leapers scope....or most made in China. They are not worth the scrap metal they could be melted down for.
